Dooyeweerd's Doctrine of Science by Robert B. Knudsen JASA 31 (December 1979):209-213
Herman Dooyeweerd, the late professor emeritus of jurisprudence at the Free University of Amsterdam, believed that there is a legitimate place for science in the way God has.
Dooyeweerd, therefore, was able to say that the cosmos is a structure of meaning without holding that this structure is self-sufficient, as he said, "substance." All structure is created structure, created meaning-structure, whose being is in its dependence upon God.

Dooyeweerd distinguishes 15 modal aspects within the modal structure, all of which mutually refer to one another and form the coherence which points to and expresses the meaning-totality which in turn points beyond itself toward the Origin.
Dooyeweerd describes the self as the concentration-point of all one's cosmic functions and as a subjective totality which lies at the basis of all philosophical thought presupposing all modes of functioning as well as the coherence of functioning.
Dooyeweerd then criticizes not the fact that Franken, as one of the adherents of the self-sufficiency of reason, defends his theory as the true one but rather the scientific tyranny with which he tries to disqualify other thinkers as exercisers of science.

 Notes from a Byzantine-Rite Calvinist
A lot of nonsense is written about it." In Dooyeweerd’s language, she has effectively reduced a complex phenomenon, in which the psychical and ethical aspects are especially prominent, to the biotic or even the physical modalities.
Dooyeweerd would put the matter less colourfully perhaps, but he would agree that the materialist, who sees the entire cosmos through the narrow lenses of only one or two modal aspects, has missed the fulness of human life, if not experientially, at least theoretically.
Dooyeweerd's philosophy is not a substitute for this fulness of experience.

Although Herman Dooyeweerd was not generally known outside of his native Netherlands during his lifetime, he was in fact one of the most original philosophers of the twentieth century.
Dooyeweerd further developed Abraham Kuyper's seminal insights, particularly his notion of sphere sovereignty, with a higher degree of theoretical consistency and sophistication.
Dooyeweerd is author of In the Twilight of Western Thought (1960), The Roots of Western Culture (1979), A New Critique of Theoretical Thought (1953), and The Christian Idea of the State (1967).

Dooyeweerd was Professor of the Philosophy of Law at the Free University of Amsterdam, and a Fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences.
Dooyeweerd contends that the various natural and social sciences, both in their successes and in their failures, have revealed the need for distinguishing between the modalities (rnodi, wi/zen, modaal aspectcn) of existence and the concrete things, events, persons, institutions, etc., which function according to these modalities.
Dooyeweerd has attempted to answer this problem regarding the modes of human experience by showing that human freedom is always a freedom made possible by the transcendental norms which call people to action.

Central to Dooyeweerd’s explanation of the transcendental conditions of all human thought are two primary components: on the one hand, his distinction between naïve and theoretical thought, and on the other hand, his system of modal aspects.
Dooyeweerd believes the fact that the structures of our thought are not inherent to the construction of our epistemology but rather dependent on the construction of the surrounding world is the reason we are capable of communicating with even the unbeliever, the one who denies the religious ground-motive of creation-fall-redemption.
Dooyeweerd’s dialectical construction between the naïve and theoretical has made the theoretical exclude the knowledge of God and His revelation, because the universality of the theoretical aspects is defined in exclusion of the particularity of the content of knowledge.

Dooyeweerd was the chief architect of the philosophical tradition known as 'reformational philosophy.' Dooyeweerd's major work, A New Critique of Theoretical Thought (1935, 1958) sets out his idea of a philosophy that holistically brings together various disciplines with faith at its centre.
Dooyeweerd's work was intrinsic to ICS's founding and his influence on ICS is felt still today.
“Dooyeweerd continues to be the source of the distinctive scholarly tools that allow the scholarly community of ICS to work within the academy, having something worthwhile and Christian to say,” commented H. Evan Runner Chair in the History of Philosophy at ICS, Dr. Robert Sweetman.

Dirk Hendrik Theodoor Vollenhoven (1892-1978) was with Herman Dooyeweerd the first generation of reformational philosophers, an intellectual movement with which Vollenhoven worked communally from his election in 1936 as President of the newly-organized group formed to advance the movement; the organization is now known as the Association for Reformational philosophy.
Both Vollenhoven and the two-years-younger Herman Dooyeweerd had been educated at the Gereformeerd Gymnasium (an academic highschool in Amsterdam) and both studied straight through the VU curriculum to achieve their doctorates, with the younger Dooyeweerd always two years behind.
Two years later Herman Dooyeweerd published a first full-dress statement of their philosophy, although by no means did they agree on everything.[3] The two-volume work was entitled Der Wijsbegeerte der Wetsidee (The Philosophy of the Law-Idea, often abbreviated "WdW").

The Pretended Autonomy of Theoretical Thought [Free Republic]
In this passage, Dooyeweerd expounds the view (to which he does not subscribe) that reality consists of a continuum; on one is end is the pole of "pure thought" (literally reines Denken in the Dutch) which is considered to be immanent, subjective, and free of ego.
In this view, the pole pure thought is known as "the transcendental-logical subject", and it is this concept which Dooyeweerd seeks to challenge.
In the excerpt above, Dooyeweerd points out that how the quest for certainty (since there have been so many failed attempts in philosopohy for a coherent expression of the total order of being), philosophers posited a starting point which would once for all solve the discrepancies.

This antireductionism originates in the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, one of the founders of a school of Christian philosophy called the cosmonomic philosophy.
He shows that an understanding of the nature of the infinite is crucial both for appreciating the reductionistic inclination of modern set theory--which tries to eliminate all references to space--and for assessing the general character of mathematics.
Strauss introduces the idea of the mutual coherence and irreducibility of number and space suggested by the cosmonomic philosophy of Dooyeweerd, and develops a proposal to avoid the antinomies that have plagued the foundations of mathematics.

In the 1930s the Dutch Reformed philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd made it clear that, though Abraham Kuyper was crowned with the most extraordinary gifts, he certainly had some blind spots.
It was not until Dooyeweerd that sphere sovereignty was reconstructed into the full-grown philosophical theory that we know so well today.
