Hermann Gundert (Stuttgart, February 4, 1814 – April 25, 1893 in Calw, Germany) was a German missionary and scholar, who compiled a Malayalam grammar book, Malayalabhaasha Vyakaranam (1868), the first Malayalam-English dictionary (1872), and translated the Bible into Malayalam.

A master in 18 languages including Malayalam, Gundert is credited with launching the first Malayalam newspaper, Rajyasamacharam, in 1847 as well as the famous English-Malayalam dictionary, written by him and verified after going back to Germany in 1859.
Present on the occasion were Gertude Frenz from the fifth generation of the Gundert family, Francis Fanthome, secretary and chief executive of the Indian Council of Secondary Education (ICSE), representatives of the Swiss company Volkart and few representatives from Calv, the town where Gundert was born.

The school was started in 1996 by the Hermann Gundert Foundation (HGF) in memory of the German missionary who had made Thalassery his home for two decades, between 1839 and 1859.
Welcoming the delegation, chairman of Hermann Gundert Foundation Murkot Ramunny said that Gundert's legacy would continue to perpetuate the bond between Thalassery and Calw.
