His early criminal career was based on fraud and forgery, including a cure for alcoholism, real estate scams, and a machine that made natural gas from water.
Mudgett, the executioner did bungle; Mudgett's neck did not snap immediately, and he died slowly and painfully of strangulation over the course of about 15 minutes.

Mudgett's story is told in a novel by five writers who have collaborated on "The Devil's Rood." Known as the U.S. Five, the writers are Jacksonville University professor Bob Stanton and four of his former students: Sandi Branum, Gary Izzo, Dedra Torelli and Nina Wade.
Mudgett, who had five distinct personalities, is believed to have killed as many as 250 people, many of whom were visitors to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
Mudgett's trial was covered extensively by The New York Times, which called it the "Trial of the Century." It was discovered that he was married to three women at the time of his arrest.

Mudgett is just one of several deviate serial killers associated with Chicago (along with John Wayne Gacy, Larry Eyler, Leopold & Loeb and Richard Speck.

I would like to post something hopefully worth mentioning about Detective Geyer, who worked on the Mudgett case in 1890 since I am one who believes there is a link between Herman Mudgett and Jack the Ripper.
Unsurprisingly enough, Herman Mudgett wrote his own version of the crime which is still there at the DC library, published about the same time Detective Geyer authored "The Holmes-Pitezel Case".
It's been a number of years since I read about the Mudgett case, but as I recall, Geyer knew who he was after and tailed him across several different states.
