Hermanis Matisons (1894 1932), (also known as Herman Mattison), was a Latvian chess player and one of world's most highly regarded chess masters in the early 1930s.
Matisons played first board for Latvia at the 1931 Chess Olympiad in Prague and defeated Rubinstein and Alekhine, who was the world chess champion at that time.
Sixty of Matisons' studies were collected in the 1987 book Mattison's Chess Endgame Studies by T.G. Whitworth.

Matisons was not yet 19 and had already published some problems and studies.
Matisons was missing from the Latvian team of the 1928 and 1930 Olympiads but the following year he did play at Prague and defeated the reigning world champion in round 16.
GM John Nunn writes that Matisons "was a strong player in addition to being a fine study composer and it is unfortunate that he is remembered mainly for losing a famous rook ending to Rubinstein".

Colle, Tschepurnoff and Euwe were in the lead after 6th round, 3½ points each (Colle yet to have a rest day), ahead of Matisons and Golmayo - 3.
Colle might have levelled on points with both Latvians had he only beaten Matisons in the very last round, but he barely drew.
Hermanis Matisons, the young Latvian master was proclained the "World Amateur Champion" and received gold medal, his team-mate Apšenieks, the runner-up, and Colle who finished third were awarded with the silver-plated medals and the rest of the finalists received bronze medals.

Matisons, von Beruf Staatsbeamter, gewann 1924 die Landesmeisterschaft und im gleichen Jahr in Paris die vom neu gegründeten Weltschachverband FIDE erstmals ausgetragene Amateurweltmeisterschaft.
Bei der zweiten Auflage dieses Turniers in Den Haag 1928 wurde er Dritter hinter Max Euwe und Dawid Przepiórka.
