  Ebbinghaus, Hermann
Ebbinghaus returned to Germany to serve as a lecturer at the University of Berlin, conducting his second set of memory experiments in 1883.
Ebbinghaus studied his own memorization of nonsense syllables, such as "WID" and "ZOF." By repeatedly testing himself after various time periods and recording the results, he was the first to describe the shape of the forgetting curve.
Ebbinghaus observed that the speed of forgetting depends on a number of factors such as the difficulty of the learned material, how meaningful the material is to the subject, representation of material, and other physiological factors including stress and sleep.

Ebbinghaus received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Bonn in 1873.
After completing his work on memory, Ebbinghaus turned to research on colour vision and in 1890, with the physicist Arthur König, founded the periodical Zeitschrift für Psychologie und Physiologie der Sinnesorgane (“Journal of the Psychology and Physiology of the Sense Organs”).
Ebbinghaus' research showed that, contrary to prevailing beliefs, scientific methods could be applied to the study of the higher thought processes.

Ebbinghaus rounds off the corners of his solid because the transition between the colours is not sharply defined.
Ebbinghaus published a "Theory of Colour Vision" in the Zeitschrift für Psychology (Journal of Psychology) in 1893, in which he points out — amongst other things — that the perception of colours can only be accomplished with the aid of "higher mental processes".
In addition, Ebbinghaus had discovered that two white hues produced by spinning either red and green or blue and yellow colour-tops indeed appeared the same at certain levels of brightness, but appeared different when the illumination was reduced.

Hermann Ebbinghaus: Memory learning memorization maximizing recall retention
Stimuli were relatively simple (e.g., a flash of light, a sound of a given frequency or amplitude, pressure from a weight of known mass or from two points at varying distances from one another, chemical odors) and the observer's response typically involved a simple judgment or movement, possibly accompanied by introspection regarding the experience itself.
In answer to these needs, Ebbinghaus hit upon the idea of a 'nonsense syllable.' As he described it: 'Out of the simple consonants of the alphabet and our eleven vowels and diphthongs all possible syllables of a certain sort were constructed, a vowel sound being placed between two consonants.
The problem with this method, however, is that the degree to which any given material is learned in a fixed number of trials may vary as a function of the material or the mental state (e.g., attention, fatigue) of the learner.

In pursuit of his ambition to apply the scientific method to the study of 'higher' cognitive processes, Ebbinghaus invented a new method for the study of memory.
At Breslau, Ebbinghaus established another laboratory (1894) and published a new method for testing the mental ability of schoolchildren, the 'Ebbinghaus completion test,' (1897) which is still used.
