The "Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg" (or German School of Hermannsburg) lies in the little village of Hermannsburg on the eastern fringe of the Natal Midlands between Greytown and Kranskop.
The Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg is the oldest of the German Private Schools in South Africa, having been established in 1856.
Hermannsburg in South Africa was founded in 1854 by Missionaries from the Hermannsburg Missionary Society in Germany, who built the Mission house shown alongside (which today houses the Museum).

 Artist's Footsteps
The Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission was situated at the base of Mount Hermannsburg on the banks of the Finke River, and it was here that Albert's parents received basic religious instruction.
Albert captured this occasion by decorating a mulga wood boomerang with pokerwork, depicting a group of seven of the workmen laying the water pipes in the trench.
He returned to Hermannsburg, and in May 1951, several of his watercolours were included in an exhibition with the works of other artists in Rex Battarbee's house in Alice Springs.

The Hermannsburg style of painting, initiated by Albert Namatjirra (1902 - 1959) at Hermannsburg Mission in the1930s, adapted Western painting techniques to the landscape of the Northern Territory in a uniquely Aboriginal style.Benjamin Landara (1921 - 1985) was Namatjira's son-in-law and trained by him.

A Full-blooded member of the Arunta tribe, he became interested in painting when the Melbourne painters, Rex Battarbee and John A. Gardner, visited the Hermannsburg Mission in 1932, 1934 and again in 1936.
Within two days of the opening all his pictures were sold at prices ranging from one to six guineas and a fashion for his work was created that soon extended to the whole of Australia.

The hundred-kilometre track starts immediately south of Hermannsburg and after 10km of corrugated road, you descend into the riverbed.
The sole designated campsite is at Boggy Hole, much nicer than it sounds and around two hours (28.5km) from Hermannsburg.
The campsite looks out from beneath river red gums to permanent reed-fringed waterholes, best seen at dawn as the sunlight creeps across the gorge and the ponds are alive with birdlife.

 Strehlow, Carl Friedrich - Bright Sparcs Biographical entry
Carl Friedrich Strehlow was head of the Finke River Mission, Hermannsburg from 1894-1922.
He became fluent in the languages of the Aranda and Loritja people and his seven volume work on their myths, legends, material culture and customs was published between 1907and 1920.

 WESTERN MACDONNELL RANGES
Just before you reach Hermannsburg is the Namatjira Monument, for the painter Albert Namatjira who was the first Aboriginal person to be granted Australian citizenship.
Once at Hermannsburg you can visit the mission with its old pretty buildings, as well as the tearooms and store.
It is in the tearooms where you can buy a permit for the Mereenie Loop Road, and unfortunately the rest of town is out of bounds as it is Aboriginal land.

The road to Hermannsburg is sealed all the way and it is always a nice drive along the West MacDonnell Range.
Leaving Hermannsburg follow the road back out to the sealed road from Alice Springs and turn right, follow this for a short while until you see the turn on your left to Palm Valley.
