 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Berthold of Reichenau
When Hermannus saw death approaching, he entrusted to Berthold all the wax tablets that contained the writings which he had not yet committed to parchment and commissioned Berthold to peruse them and, after careful revision, to copy them on parchment.
Berthold was also exhorted by his dying master to continue the famous world-chronicle, begun by Hermann, which in chronological order related the history of the world from the birth of Christ to 1054, the year in which Hermann died.
To the continuation of this chronicle and to a biography of his master and friend, Hermannus Contractus, is due whatever fame is attached to the name of Berthold.

Hermannus Contractus' 30 chants in honour of St Afra of Augsburg
In 2004 the diocese of Augsburg will celebrate the anniversary of its most prominent patron saint, Afra (+304), and an edition of the Historia Sanctae Afrae composed by Hermannus Contractus (1013-1054) will appear to mark the occasion.
Together with the recently published Historia Sancti Wolfgangi, which Hermannus composed for the canonization of Wolfgang of Regensburg in 1052, over 60 antiphons and responsories by Hermannus will then be available in modern editions, complementing his so far better-known music-theoretical writings and making possible a better balanced appreciation of his musical achievements.

 Rhythmomachy
Virtually nothing is known about the origin of the game.
But it is known that medieval writers attributed it to Pythagoras, although no trace of it has been discovered in Greek literature, and the earliest mention of it is from the time of Hermannus Contractus[?] (1013-1054).
The name, which appears in a variety of forms, points to a Greek origin, the more so because Greek was little known at the time when the game first appears in literature.

Gerbert reintroduced the abacus into Europe, and in a letter of 984, he asks Lupitus of Barcelona for a translation of an Arabic language astronomy treatise.
Gerbert may have been the author of a description of the astrolabe that was redacted by Hermannus Contractus some 50 years later.
As pope, he took energetic measures against the widespread practices of simony and concubinage among the clergy, maintaining that only capable men of spotless lives should be allowed to become bishop.

Hymn Writers of the Church | Christian Classics Ethereal Library
There are at least four men for whom the authorship of the famous Latin hymn, "Veni Sancte Spiritus," is claimed, and no conclusive evidence exists that any one of them wrote it.
The other three alleged authors are: Hermannus Contractus, 1013-1054; Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury, consecrated in 1207; and Pope Innocent III.
This hymn, therefore, will be most properly designated as of unknown authorship.

A force of Goths launched one of the first major "barbarian" invasions of the Roman Empire in 267 (Hermannus Contractus, quoting Eusebius, has "263: Macedonia, Graecia, Pontus, Asia et aliae provinciae depopulantur per Gothos").
A year later, they suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Naissus and were driven back across the Danube River by 271.
