Anus - Uncyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Having become god of embalming, Anus became strongly associated with the (currently) mysterious and ancient imiut fetish, present during funerary rites, and Bast, who by this time was goddess of bile, initially became thought of as his mother.
In later times, during the Ptolemaic period, as their functions were similar, Anus was identified as the Greek god Hermes, becoming Hermanubis.
Indeed, Hermanubis also appears in the alchemical and hermetical literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

 Curtis Chapter I
Hermanubis was another god of rather complicated origins.
It was an easy step to identify this form with the Greek god Hermes, and to thus develop the final name "Hermanubis." Although the coin types always depict Hermanubis with a human head, his identification with Anubis is usually evidenced by an attendant jackal.
The bust of Hermanubis is from a tetradrachm of Elagabalus, while the standing figure is from one of Philip II.

Werewolves Part II - Castle of Spirits
The cult eventually transferred to Rome and by the first century AD statues of a jackal headed human figure called Hermanubis were numerous.
Germanic troops recruited into the Roman armies would have observed priests of hermanubis wearing their wolf-like masks and seen the jackal-headed statues and would undoubtedly have remembered and spoken of them after the Roman Empire's fall.
In turn, as suggested by Trotti, distorted accounts of these could eventually have inspired legends of humans who were able to assume the form of wolves.

Anubis' role as the god of the dead won him a universal cult, while his association with Osiris assured the survival of the cult until the last days of the Egyptian religion.
Some Graeco-Egyptian magickians identified Anubis with Hermes, the Conductor of Souls into the afterlife (psychopomp), and gave him the compound name Hermanubis, portraying him bearing the caduceus.
Other Graeco-Egyptian magickians saw him as a cosmic deity ruling over earth and sky, bringing light to humanity and manufacturing love potions.
