Topic: Hermes (shuttle)

In the News (Sat 26 Dec 09)

  Hermes
Hermes was designed to take three astronauts to orbits of up to 800 km altitude on missions of 30 to 90 days in space.
Hermes was to have been launched atop an Ariane 5 by 1998, but by 1992 estimated development costs rose to DM 12 billion and the project was cancelled.
Hermes would have provided independent European manned access to space, and the weight growth of the spacecraft during design and development was a major driver in the specification for the Ariane 5 space launcher.

 Halfbakery: Joint NASA-ESA Shuttle Program
The advent of the shuttle program, by providing a reusable, somewhat reliable system, took some of the steam out of the new tech side as it aged, and NASA evolved into as much of a maintenance organization as an exploration center.
Shuttle flights are followed by people around the world and help foster the imagination and dreams of millions.
If we had never built the shuttle or at least studied it, we would never have known that the typical useful lifecycle, given the current trend in technological advancement, is about 20 years or so.

SPACE.com -- Mystery Asteroid, Hermes, May Have a Partner
Hermes, a space rock lost to science for 66 years and recently rediscovered, could actually be a pair of orbiting asteroids, new radar observations suggest.
Hermes had not been seen since its 1937 discovery until found anew in a collaborative effort last week.
When Hermes was recovered last week and thought to be a single object, astronomers estimated its diameter at 0.62 to 1.24 miles (1-2 kilometers).

Hermes played his lyre and sang songs about what a terrific guy Apollo was and soon he softened from resenting to relenting.
Hermes figured he was getting pretty good at seeing into the minds of others, so he also got Apollo to refer him to the best Personal Trainers in the arts of Prophesy and Divination.
Hermes’ job was to operate a shuttle service for the dead who were entering Hades, and was to extend his courier service into the Underworld.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Long-lost asteroid Hermes is binary
At this point, the identification with Hermes was clear from the similarity of the orbits from the 1937 and 2003 sightings, but it was not a simple matter to compute an orbit that linked all the observations together.
On October 16, Andrew Rivkin and Richard Binzel of MIT observed a spectrum of Hermes using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii, and were able to ascertain that the asteroid is of a type known as S class.
Lowell Observatory was founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell with a mission to pursue the study of astronomy, especially the study of our Solar System and its evolution; to conduct pure research in astronomical phenomena; and to maintain quality public education and outreach programs to bring results of astronomical research to the general public.

Internally the Shuttle remains largely similar to the original design, with the exception that the avionics continues to be improved.
One of the first fictional uses of the Space Shuttle was in the 1979 James Bond film, Moonraker, in which a fleet of privately-produced Shuttles was used to ferry personnel to a space station operated by the evil Sir Hugo Drax.
A version of the Shuttle also appeared in the comedy film Airplane II: The Sequel in the early 1980s, in which it was used as a Passenger liner between Earth and the Moon and experiences a traditional "airline disaster film" scenario en route.

The End Of US Manned Spaceflight Looms Ever Closer
Many years of Shuttle flights have give some people the idea that reusable spacecraft must have wings, but in fact the only reason the Shuttle has wings is a long-forgotten USAF requirement.
Again, this option was considered for Shuttle Orbiter and rejected due to severe weight penalties and the complications involved in protecting the turbojets during reentry.
Most importantly, the Shuttle flight rate has declined from ~7/yr in the mid-90s to ~4/yr today, while the budget has fallen ~40% and is scheduled to drop further in the current 5-year budget plan.

The first shuttle that blew up was due to a faulty o-ring on the booster.

The Space Shuttle is a reusable rocket-launched vehicle designed to transport people and cargo between Earth and orbiting spacecraft, and then to return to the Earth's surface by gliding down and landing on a runway.
The Shuttle was selected in the early 1970s as the principal space launcher and carrier vehicle to be developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
An assembled Space Shuttle is approximately 184 feet (56 meters) long, 76 feet (23 meters) high to the tip of the orbiter’s vertical tail, and 78 feet (24 meters) wide, measuring across the orbiter’s wingtips.

The winged shuttle orbiter is launched vertically, usually carrying five to seven astronauts (although eight have been carried and eleven could be accommodated in emergency) and up to 50,000 lb (22,700 kg) of payload into low earth orbit.
Shuttles are each a partially reusable launch system composed of three main assemblies: the reusable Orbiter Vehicle (OV), the expendable External Tank (ET), and the two reusable Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs).
While the shuttle might safely endure a lightning strike, a similar strike caused problems on Apollo 12, so for safety NASA chooses not to launch the shuttle if lightning is possible.

Germany's Slash in Aid Is Blow to Joint Project, And Perhaps to Others: Manned Flight By Europeans Is Delayed Until 2005
Although anticipated in the aerospace industry, the public admission that Hermes might be beyond Europe's financial reach at this juncture was a blow to hopes, particularly in France, that Germany could continue to pour investments into prestigious pan-European ventures.
In practice, the Europeans, chiefly France and Germany, are under pressure to decide sometime this summer whether to pursue the Hermes program, at an estimated cost of $1 million a day, or turn to the scaled-down alternative of an unmanned space vehicle, known as the Hermes Demonstrator.
The successive slips in Hermes, which was scheduled at its inception in 1987 to be in space within a decade, might induce participants to shelve their main space programs until the financial climate improves.

 Hermes (shuttle) - Wikipedia

Challenger was destroyed in an explosion during launch in January 1986 with the loss of all seven astronauts on board, and Endeavour was built as a replacement (using spare parts originally built for the other orbiters) and delivered in May 1991.
The original mission of the shuttle was to operate at a high flight rate, at low cost, and with high reliability.
A version of the shuttle also appeared in the comedy film Airplane II: The Sequel in the early 1980s, in which it was used as a passenger liner between Earth and the Moon.

One space shuttle launch cost a lot of money, even though an automated one where you don't really care about it blowing up would be cheaper because you can cut corners.
On the other hand, an automated shuttle would be slightly safter than a crewed shuttle as automatic pilot can still function in situations where human pilots can't.
