Hermit kingdom (Korea) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hermit kingdom is a label that Westerners have often applied to Korea, particularly to the Joseon dynasty and to contemporary North Korea.
The claim that Korea was a hermit kingdom has increasingly been seen as erroneous in recent times.
The first documented use of "hermit" to refer to Korea is in the title of William Elliot Griffis' 1882 book, Corea: The Hermit Nation.

 History of Korea, part I
All three kingdoms were heavily influenced by China, and Buddhism was introduced to Koguryo in 372.
Like other kingdoms before it, Koryo was also subject to internal strife and external threats, most notably from the Mongols who had taken over China.
With the arrival of Japanese and Western traders in the 19th century, the Korean rulers tried to prevent the opening of the country to foreign trade by closing the borders, earning Korea its nickname of the Hermit Kingdom.

 A Concise History of Korea
Because the Korean peninsula is an extension of the Asian mainland, and because Korean kingdoms were dwarfed by their giant neighbor to the west, Korea has often been treated as little more than an appendage of China.
With this transformation Mahan became the kingdom of Paekche, and Chinhan and Pyonhan merged to form the kingdom of Silla.
For this reason the period of Korean history from 1637 to 1910 is called "the Hermit Kingdom." As long as foreigners were more interested in China or Japan, this policy worked, but eventually Westerners got into the country anyway.

Battling Koguryo and each other, the kingdoms of Paekche and Silla competed for dominance on the peninsula, while the smaller Kaya League struggled to hold its own in the southern Naktong River basin.
The Kingdom of Silla unified Korea and took on the cloak of T'ang Chinese culture, eventually falling victim to the same internal problems that plagued China's great dynasties.
Numerous battles among Korea's Later Three Kingdoms led to the surrender of Silla and the collapse of Later Paekche.

Korea is known both as the land of the morning calm and the hermit kingdom.
The phrase "hermit kingdom" derives from a time when Korea withdrew from the chaos instilled by the political ambitions of its neighbors and Western political and cultural incursions into East Asia.
Eventually the Shilla kingdom unified the peninsula under a single state system, and the Unified Shilla Kingdom emerged as a culture in the second half of the 6th century A.D. The pottery underwent many changes.

In one frustrating example, the book makes repeated mention of a group of four American servicemen who defected to the Hermit Kingdom in the 1960s; two more crossed the Demilitarized Zone into North Korea much later on.
