As of 2005 the future of the Hermitage Rooms is uncertain after the Hermitage announced its plans to withdraw its loans of artworks overseas.

During 1941, Army experts made a structural evaluation of the Hermitage and determined that the vaulting and walls of the ground floor and of the palace basements were massive enough to withstand the destructive power of the biggest blockbuster bomb and the largest artillery shell.
Hermitage staff who were not well physically fit for such service stayed to work on collection evacuation, stand air raid watches, serve in emergency response teams, work in the Hermitage convalescent center when it was open, and volunteer to defend the city digging trenches and putting up anti‑tank barriers.
On 24 August 1944 Hermitage Director Iosif Orbeli in Moscow was advised to prepare a detailed plan for the capital repair of the Hermitage Museum buildings, the return of the evacuated collections, and the restoration of the main exhibition rooms and depositories.

The idea of creating the Hermitage Rooms in one of London’s palaces emerged in 1998 during a meeting between Mikhail Piotrovsky, the Hermitage Director, and Lord Rothschild.
The Hermitage Development Trust headed by Mikhail Piotrovsky and Lord Rothschild invested about seven million dollars in the project, which, in conjunction with financial support from individual and corporate sponsors, made it possible to open the Hermitage Rooms in Somerset House.
The Hermitage Rooms consist of five galleries with a total floor area of over 4400 square feet (411 square metres) and are located on the ground floor of the south wing of the building.

It is necessary to remember these horrors when viewing the exquisite objects on display that have been loaned by the Hermitage Museum in the former Petrograd and yet to follow a Kantian aesthetic and set them to one side when judging the objective and independent beauty of these items.
We should be even more grateful to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, which has owned these items since it took over the Lomonosov Museum in 2001, to the Courtauld and to the Russian URALSIB financial corporation for sponsoring it.
