The Marcomanni occupied the basin of the Saale, but under their king, Maroboduus, they moved into Bohemia during the early part of Augustus's reign, while the Quadi, who are first mentioned in the time of Tiberius, lay farther east towards the sources of the Elbe.
The former home of the Marcomanni was occupied by the Hermunduri a few years before the Christian era.
The Alamanni (q.v.) seem to have been, in part at least, the descendants of the ancient Hermunduri, but it is likely that they had been joined by one or more other Suebic peoples, from the Danubian region, or more probably from the middle Elbe, the land of the ancient Semnones.

There can be little doubt, however, that the ancient Hermunduri [Hermun Duringer-Thueringian] formed the preponderating element in the nation.
The Hermunduri had apparendy belonged to the Suebi, but it is likely enough that reinforcements from new Suebic tribes had now moved westward.

There can be little doubt, however, that the ancient Hermunduri formed the bulk of the nation.
From the 4th century onwards we hear also of the Suebi, Suevi or Suabi.
In later times the names Alamanni and Suebi seem to be synonymous, although some of the Suebi later migrated to Hispania and established an independent kingdom there that endured well into the sixth century.

The Hermunduri in the basin of the Saale were in alliance with the Romans and occupied northern Bavaria with their consent.
In the year 5o Vannius, king of the Suebi, was driven from the throne by Vibilius, king of the Hermunduri, and his nephews Vangio and Sido obtained his kingdom.
They seem, however, to have recovered very soon, and at the end of the 1st century had apparently extended their power at the expense of the Cherusci.

Chieftain Miketorix, leader of the Turingi since seven years, was a brave yet level-headed man. His reign began when the hostile tribe of the Hermunduri threatened the eastern settlements; Those people were of savage character, coming from the steppes of the Rus.
That is why Miketorix decided to lead the Hermunduri, now (more or less) loyal vassals, to the northeastern flatlands.
And once the Hermunduri“s thirst for conquests was satisfied, they would probably become a firm pillar of a Turingi empire...

Alemanni Origins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The first documented reference to the Alamanni occurs in AD 213, when the Emperor Caracalla fought against them.
The name Alamanni means "All Men" and implies a confederacy of several tribes, which may very well have included Hermunduri and Suebi, since the area of Germany in which they emerged encompassed the old tribal lands of these peoples.
The confederacy must have been a loose one, however, since several Alamannic kings are recorded as ruling simultaneously, and even as late as the Fifth Century there seems to have been no strong, centralised authority.

The Pennsylvania Dutch are direct descendants of the Hermunduri tribes, which existed directly to the north of Rome in early Roman times, and which a little later became the Alamanni tribe, taking in a few others (Alamanni means "all men").
The Alamanni or Hermunduri had to give way before these same "barbarians" from further north, superior in number and desperate.
It was also the fate of the Hermunduri to face as next-door neighbors the older and far better organized Mediterranean civilization - the Romans in the heydey of their power.

Neckar) is the river that goes through their territory, which bordered on those of the Tutones/Teutones, Marcomanni and Naristi.
After the Marcomanni moved East into today's Frankonia, the Hermunduri settled in the area, between T[e]utones and Suebi Nicretes.
Apparently, most of these tribes had close cultural and cultic relationships to one another and to the Suebi on both sides of the Elbe ("Elbsueben"), including the Langobardi; thus, Tacitus sums them up (together with Suebi and Semnomes) as Herminones (which also include the Chatti, Cherusci and Angrivarii).
