The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was the Yugoslav state that existed from the end of World War II to the Yugoslav wars.
It was a communist republic that comprised the area of the present-day states of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro and Slovenia.

The USSR was created and expanded as a union of Soviet republics formed within the territory of the Russian Empire abolished by the Russian Revolution of 1917 followed by the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920.
In the late 1980s constituent republics of the Soviet Union started asserting sovereignty over their territories or even declaring independence, citing Article 72 of the USSR Constitution, which stated that any constituent republic was free to secede.
One republic, Karelo-Finnish SSR, was disbanded in 1956, and the territory formally became the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR) within the Russian SFSR.

The Soviet Union was established in December 1922 as the union of the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Transcaucasian Soviet republics ruled by Bolshevik parties.

The Allies thought that their forces would be able to move south up the Northern Dvina to the railhead at Kotlas and then to Vyatka to join a larger and better armed Czechoslovak force that would fight its way west along the Trans-Siberian Railroad.
In mid-September, the Allies took Shenkursk, which was then the second largest town in the Archangel Region and is strategically located on the Vaga River, a western tributary of the Northern Dvina that joins the larger river 140 miles northwest of Kotlas.
