The Real Site of Herod's Temple in Jerusalem
Herod's Temple is referred to by the Jewish people as the Second Temple (the First one being Solomon's Temple), but we shall see later that this designation is not correct.
Eyewitnesses such as Josephus have stated that the Temple could not be seen from the north because it was obstructed by the Fort to the north which was at a higher elevation.
Herod moved the temple still further north after expanding the temple mount to a 600 ft x 600 ft platform.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Herod
Herod was the name of many rulers mentioned in the N.T. and in history.
The death of Herod is important in its relation to the birth of Christ.
He was, like many other Herods, a builder, and, according to Josephus, he so strengthened the walls of Jerusalem that the emperor became alarmed and ordered him "to leave off the building of those walls presently" ("Ant.", XIX, vii, 2).

Temple, Herod's - The temple erected by the exiles on their return from Babylon had stood for about five hundred years, when Herod the Great became king of Judea.
The engineers of the Palestine Exploration Fund, in their explorations around the temple area, discovered what is believed to have been the "chief corner stone" of the temple, "the most interesting stone in the world." It lies at the bottom of the south-eastern angle, and is 3 feet 8 inches high by 14 feet long.
The temple, when completed, was consecrated amid great rejoicings on the part of all the people (Ezra 6:16), although there were not wanting outward evidences that the Jews were no longer an independent people, but were subject to a foreign power.

 Solomon and Herods' Temples
Josephus said that Antonias size was much larger than the Temple (he described Fort Antonia as the size of a city and it contained a full legion of Roman troops with many open spaces for military exercises and training).
Another eyewitness account was given by Aristeas in 285 B.C. He said the Temple at Jerusalem had within its precincts a natural spring of water, and Tacitus the Roman historian in 100 A.D. also mentioned this inexhaustible spring that was located within the walls of the Temple just before its destruction by the Romans.
It was also simple and very logical to show the two colonnade roadways near the northwest angle of the external Temple wall extending a further 600 feet northward to intersect with the southwest corner of Fort Antonia.

Under Roman rule, the Herods, a Jewish family, were appointed to local kingship.
Herod the Great (ruled 37 to 4 BC) rebuilt the city and its second temple, and promoted the Hellenistic culture which had deeply affected Jewish life after the death of Alexander the Great.
The Third Temple, too, was destroyed by Roman legions in 70 AD, although one wall was left standing.

This temple within Revelations is a symbolic instruction to measure the temple described in Revelations, and is much different than the temple of the past described in Ezekiel 40 of which a very detailed description of a temple measurement is followed for several chapters.
Also regarding the instructions John is given in measuring the temple, these involve four points, to measure the temple, also the alter, with unusual instruction to count the worshipers, and last being to omit the outer court that has been given to the Gentile.
This temple of Revelations has an alter, the alter is before God, it is not a sin offering alter, it is the temple and alter from which comes end day judgments against man and creation.

Jesus said that Herods temple was like His body, yes, but He did not deny the reality of Herods temple.
But to have non-literal temple symbolic of a spiritual reality is inconsistent with the way the bible speaks throughout on other subjects.
And so Israel becoming a nation again in 1948 was the first step in the process to fulfilling Ezekiel 40 concerning the temple and city, whether the prophecy is taken allegorically or literally, just as the return from Babylon in 538-537 BC was the first step toward rebuilding the temple of Zerubabbel in 520-516 BC.
