Bags and Boards: Close to Home
Meltzer (co-creator of The WB TV series "Jack and Bobby") has used this series to justify the reason most heroes have for keeping their identities secret: the need to protect their loved ones.
After one of those loved ones was killed in the first issue, the trail to the resolution led into some pretty dark and unexpected places for the bright heroes of the DC universe.
The conclusion, like the beginning, is satisfying not because of who was killed or is found responsible, but in how closely the crime hits to the humanity behind the masks of these characters, exposing it in a way we haven't seen in a long time, if ever.

Do Crossovers With Other TV Shows Like Pretenders/Profilers,
It would be fun to see the Profilers think the Others are connected to these crimes and they wind up chasing them to get them but only to find out that they led them to the real killer(s) and barely escape their clutches like the Pretender.

Maverick bucked the trend by not being a particularly fast draw with a pistol, but like all TV cowboy heroes of the era, he was almost superhumanly impossible for anyone to beat in any sort of a fistfight (perhaps the one cowboy cliche that Huggins left intact, reportedly at the insistence of the studio).
Intriguingly, there was a "Making of" mini-documetary to publicize the movie that was shown on cable TV around the time of the film's release, featuring interviews, behind-the-scenes looks at filming, and so on, but showed no clips of Garner as Bret Maverick from the original series.
Maverick is a comedy-western television series created by Roy Huggins that ran from September 22, 1957 to July 8, 1962 on ABC and featured James Garner, Roger Moore, and Jack Kelly as poker-playing travelling gamblers.

The TV show (still featured nightly on cable), along with the 1966 movie, may have been all bright colors, tight costumes and choreographed fights with the words "POW!" and "BAM!" exploding onto the screen every time the heroes landed a punch, but it couldn't repress Batman's essential darkness forever.

Batman (1989 movie) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two animated series (Batman: The Animated Series and) were created in the wake of the film's success, and four subsequent theatrical films (Batman Returns, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm [a spin-off of the animated television series], Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin) were produced.
The film was criticised, though, for its dark, grisly nature in comparison with the campy 1960's TV show, the Prince-dominated soundtrack, and fans criticized the fact that Batman, who is never supposed to kill, kills a henchman in the film.
Like many film versions of comic book heroes, the Batman movie told its own version of his origin, and how The Joker figured in that origin.
