The course is primarily concerned with how comics has developed and matured as a distinctively American art form, reflecting and commenting on post-W.W. II American society in a variety of narrative forms: comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels.

City of Heroes game subscribers in North America (US and Canada only) will receive the comic book as a freebie in the mail as part of their monthly game subscription (make sure your PlayNC account has a valid mailing address).

For decades American comics, and especially those from two prolific publishing houses, have dominated if not the market, then certainly the public's perception of it.
There are large sections devoted to heroes from Britain, France, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries, which continue to expand as I learn more about the heroes of each of those countries.
But I felt that this was an unfair slur - Britain certainly has a long history of home grown heroes that don't fall into either of these traps, and I knew from collecting titles like Northguard and Southern Squadron that the same was true for Canada and Australia.

They were a pretty selfish bunch, often with additional antisocial tendencies thrown into the bargain--in other words, not exactly role models for the younger generation of today.
So let's recognize and celebrate Hercules and Perseus and the others by their proper dictionary definition: "In mythology and legend, a man or woman, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his or her bold exploits, and favored by the gods."
