  Herpetoculture and Conservation
Since North American zoos only have room for a bout 16 snake species survival plans (Quinn and Quinn 1993; data for other amphibians and reptiles is not yet available), the possibility of letting herpetoculturists participate in conservation plans has been considered, and "studbooks" have been created for some species.
All of the successful herpetological conservation programs (four crocodilian and one lizard species) have one thing in common: captive breeding programs are housed in or near the species range and on outdoor enclosures.
At the level of herpetoculture, the release of captive produced animals into the ancestral population may sound find, however, from a genetic perspective, this could prove devastating.

Many people confuse herpetology with herpetoculture, or don't understand that there are distinctly different goals in these studies.
Note that breeding ("culture") is a goal in herpetoculture.
There is nothing inherently wrong with herpetoculture, it just has a different goal from herpetology.

Herpetoculture is the art of maintaining amphibians, turtles, reptiles and crocodilians in captivity in order to breed them for pleasure, exhibition, trading or sale, and is a subset of the time-honored field of husbandry.
Some important observations about the captive behavior of amphibians, turtles, reptiles, and crocodilians are published by curators and keepers at zoos in large metropolitan areas, but most zoo positions have little time to spare for research.
They earn a living in some other field, preferably one that allows them as much free time as possible to pursue their interest in amphibians, turtles, reptiles, and crocodilians, which is generally the husbandry and sale of domesticated versions of these creatures.

 Sample General Tips
The term herpetoculture refers to the keeping and breeding of reptiles and amphibians (herpetology is the scientific study of reptiles and amphibians).
One of the most fascinating things about amphibians is that all of them are predatory, feeding on prey ranging from mosquito larvae to crickets to young rats.
Except for tadpoles, which are herbivorous (will accept fish food), these aquatic species will also feed on feeder goldfish or minnows, which can be allowed to swim around in the tank indefinitely (well, at least until they get munched).

It consists solely in the observation that the little grasping tool used to pick up small auto parts---the thing with a spring-loaded handle and lightweight grasping "teeth" on the business end---works better than hemostats for offering smallish food items to reptiles, and is much cheaper.
That's a pretty good observation; cheap everyday objects with herpetocultural uses tend to get overlooked.
There's really no good reason for anyone, having read the paper or this review, not to pick up a couple of these tools the next time they're near an auto-parts store.
