Twenty years later, the book has long since been superseded by the likes of Cogger's definitive book (several editions) and others and most people who have entered the field of herpetology since the mid 1970's would probably have no concept of how significant Worrell's book was to herpetology here in Australia at the time.
Because I had an interest in these creatures before then, I got a licence at the relevant time and so, for a while was effectively immune from any law-enforcement activity by the department.
However for those who developed an interest in these creatures after June 1974, it was effectively impossible to get a license to keep them and thus most budding herpetologists were effectively dissuaded from pursuing their interest.

 Prolific Herpetologist Publishes Third Snake Book in a Year
Co-written with long-time colleague and mentor J. Whitfield Gibbons, a professor of ecology at the University of Georgia Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Dorcas' newest work is a pictorial guide that includes information on the behavior and activity, reproductive and feeding patterns, and habitats of fifty-two species of snakes found from Louisiana to Virginia to Florida.
He is considering a book on how to become a herpetologist, as well as an edited book on snake conservation.
He is currently working with Davidson College Herpetology Lab research coordinator Steven Price and two other collaborators to write a book on frogs of North Carolina that will include a compact disc recording of frog calls.

So, So, most folks who are herpetologists in their professional interests and research find themselves employed as teachers, zoo personnel, fish/wildlife personnel, etc. while "doing" herpetology within their capacity.
In general, herpetologists love the animals they work with, they love teaching about them, and love doing research to find out more about them.
Many, and the best way to locate such programs is to read herpetological literature in journals, taking note of the addresses of authors of articles that contain subjects of interest to you.

It is home to numerous plant and animal species, some of them found nowhere else.
We were immersed in the most gorgeous green, but soon found ourselves chafing to see some of its inhabitants.
Our first find was a snake (a cloud forest racer, Dendrophidion paucicarinatum), basking beside the path, which I caught and photographed and was photographed holding (somewhere out there is another photo album with an inexplicable photo of a scruffy looking herpetologist, complete with snake).
