Panama (Spanish: Panamá, IPA [re'puβlika ðe pana'ma]) is the southernmost country of Central America.
Much of Panama's domestic politics and international diplomacy in the 20th century was tied to the Panama Canal and the foreign policy of the United States.
Panama's political divisions are 9 provinces, 75 districts or municipalities, 5 indigenous comarcas, and 620 "corregimientos." Panama is divided into 9 provinces (provincias) and 3 provincial-level indigenous territories (comarcas indígenas).

In 1939 Panama's protectorate status was ended by mutual agreement, and in 1974 the two countries agreed to negotiate an eventual transfer of the canal to Panama.
One transferred ownership of the canal to Panama (effective from 1990) and the other guaranteed its subsequent neutrality, with the conditions that only Panamanian forces would be stationed in the zone, and that the USA would have the right to use force to keep the canal open if it became obstructed.
Constitutional amendments approved by the assembly in 1991 included abolition of the army and, although this was rejected in a referendum in 1992, in 1994 the army was formally banned as a constitutional entity.

With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone).
The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914.
The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.
