 Dinosauria Defined
Or, to go to the paper by Holtz and Padian at last year's SVP meeting, _Eoraptor_ and Herrerasauridae are dinosaurs only if they are shown (by the most parsimonious distribution of derived characters) to fall within the clade joining Ornithischia and Saurischia (or _Triceratops_ and birds, or _Iguanodon_ and _Megalosaurus_ informally).
Kevin presented the most divergent cladogram (i.e., the one in which both _Eoraptor_ and Herrerasauridae are excluded from Dinosauria) to illustrate the extreme condition.
Of course, very close sister groups will be morphologically very similar to the most primitive members of a clade (because of descent with modification, and all that stuff).

 Theropod Dinosaurs
The Herrerasauridae are an early group represented by Herrerasaurus, which was discovered in a wonderful middle-late Triassic period fossil locality (the famous Ischigualasto Formation) in Argentina in the 1970s.
The Herrerasauridae and Eoraptor may be the earliest group of theropods, or it is quite possible that they are not even theropods at all, but rather non-dinosaurs (dinosauromorphs) closely related to the ancestor of dinosaurs.
A second group of theropods is the Ceratosauria, a more morphologically modified and diverse group which includes the UCMP's very own Dilophosaurus, one of the stars of the novel and movie Jurassic Park.

dinosauromorpha   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Occasionally, someone has suggested that the sauropodomorphs and the ornithischians go together (Phytodinosauria), but this appealing idea has little evidence for it.
Herrerasauridae: The herrerasaurids have bounced around that space between basal Theropoda and just outside of Dinosauria for a few years now.
The most stable thing we can say is that they appear to be basal saurischians.

 Palaeos Mesozoic: Triassic: Carnian
This evolutionary biota, which lasted throughout the extent of the Late Carnian and into the following Early Norian age (early Carnian terrestrial faunas are very poorly known), saw a further diminishing of the therapsids, with only the traversodontids continuing in large numbers.
Only the theropods are carnivorous, but these are represented by several families (Staurikosauridae, Herrerasauridae, and possibly Coelophysidae).
All the archosaurs - herbivores and carnivores - had an efficient, vertical limb posture superior to that of the contemporary therapsids.

Note that some of these characters are lost or changed later in theropod evolution, depending on the group in question.
Another herrerasaur is Staurikosaurus, which has been known since the 1960's from remains found in Brazil.
Experts in dinosaur systematics are currently embroiled in a controversy over the exact relationships of the Herrerasauridae to theropods and other dinosaurs.

theropoda   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Not much is known yet about this new basal dinosaur.
It has been considered to be somewhere around Staurikosaurus and the rest of Herrerasauridae, or even basal to the Theropoda\ Sauropodomorpha split.
Alternately, it may instead be basal to Neotheropoda, as shown here.

Thanks now to the increasing amount of knowledge gained from the study of Fossils Found In South America, scientists are learning new facts, many of which disprove earlier held theories.
Ischigualasto Formation, Argentina is a paleontologically rich site, with numerous finds of dinosaurs and like species, like the Herrerasauridae drawn by John Sibbick.
South America becoming best stomping grounds for fossil finds with particular attention paid to Patagonia, shared by Argentina and Chile, Bolivia and Southern Brazil.

> On his ( interesting) site HP Øyvind M. Padron [gorgosaur@hotmail.com] places the Herrerasauridae within dinosauria.
I thought they had been moved out somwhere between dinosauriforms and dinosauria?< I have had this conversation with several people, some of whom say, "No, only two sacrals, not supported by cladistic analyses, not a dinosaur," and others that say, "Who cares if it only has two sacrals?
It has everything else, and our cladistic analysis puts it within the Dinosauria." At SVP this year, there was a presentation on the relationships between basal dinosaurs (including herrerasaurids), and I believe (IIRC) that all the trees presented showed that the Herrerasauridae fell within the Dinosauria.
