Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln," has offered and continues to offer a great deal to the literary culture of the United States through the publications of her writers.
Herrick's love/hate relationship with the city and city life can be found in three of his novels: The Web of Life (1900), The Common Lot (1904) and Memoirs of an American Citizen (1905).
Since then many of Illinois' writers have written not just a few masterpieces, but also works that have found, and are finding, their way into the heart of American literary culture.

In 1910 Herrick also wrote his first article on angina pectoris, and in subsequent articles he constantly encouraged clinical recognition and treatment of coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction, which at that time were most frequently diagnosed in the morgue.
Herrick made several trips to Europe for post-graduate study, and even returned to University of Chicago classrooms in order to familiarize himself with the advancements in bio-, physical, and organic chemistry and their medical applications.
Herrick's colleagues considered him a hardworking, logical and practical physician, and those qualities were recognized in his appointment to the Judicial Council of the A.M.A. in 1928, on which he served for six years.

As the notion appeared in many people’s heads that these massive birds could be “turkey vultures”, interest in the accounts began to fade and many were hesitant to report further sightings for fear of being laughed at, as the Lowes in Lawndale were.
On August 15, a witness who lived near Herrick, Illinois reported seeing two giant birds in a section of forest outside of town.
Another witness contacted me after seeing accounts of some Illinois big bird sightings in one of my books and said that she had also seen a huge winged creature in 1977.
