herringbone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A herringbone barrel is a barrel specifically designed for pins, nails and similar objects that require barrel barrel plate.
A herringbone barrel is double drilled at 45 degrees from both sides, this forms a 90 degree internal bend within the perforation, stopping the item to be plated from protruding thru the barrel.
First, a herringbone barrel is more expensive than a standard barrel, second, because of the 90 degree bend, they do not plate as fast as a regular barrel.

Herringbone Calcite (Abstract, DY Sumner)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Herringbone calcite is a previously undescribed carbonate cement and sea- floor precipitate that is common in Archean* carbonates but rare in Proterozoic* and Phanerozoic* rocks.
A Mg-calcite precursor for herringbone calcite, now preserved as low-Mg calcite or dolomite, is supported by the presence of microdolomite inclusions and textural differences between herringbone calcite and textures interpreted as neomorphosed former aragonite or low-Mg calcite.
Precipitation of herringbone calcite may be consistent with a diffusionally controlled growth model involving branching growth of fibrous crystals and the diffusion of a precipitation inhibitor away from the crystallization surface.

 Iris & Herringbone Glass
Although many pieces are the same shape as the original crystal, not all pieces were reissued, and some molds were reworked so that there are differences between the crystal and iridescent.
Herringbone and Mums and the only reference I have been able to find to this piece is in Bill Edwards' Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass.
He says, "Made by Jeannette Glass in the late 1920's, this rare depression era tumbler is a close relative to the Iris and Herringbone pattern made by the same company." Gene Florence confirmed the name for me, but thought it was produced in the 1950's.

Herringbone -- Classic motion technique -- cross country skiing -- Roberts
the most commonly held is that herringbone is a separate special "last-ditch" technique -- to walk up a steep hill -- to be used after strength and every trick has failed.
the other is that herringbone is just one more trick to improve grip -- to be blended with hill bound and other classic stride grip tricks -- in whatever mix is convenient at this moment on this particular point on the hill.
It's interesting to play around with which ideas from the climbing up steep hills "secret" in what circumstances can be helpfully applied to herringbone.

 Installing A Herringbone Hardwood Floor
The adjacent area on the left, installed as a diagonal, will eventually be separated from our herringbone area by a 2 board border that will be installed after our herringbone.
This is simply a triangle with a right angle that we cut out of plywood and screwed to floor against the side of our straight board and also against the side of the previously installed floor.
This plywood triangle will set the 45 degree angle of our herringbone installation and, much like the straight board, will prevent the boards from moving as they are installed.

 Herringbone Purfling at Stewart-MacDonald
Herringbone and "zipper" patterns of wood are available ready-made, and are sometimes inlaid as a center stripe on a guitar back.
These examples of fancy wood marquetry are delicate and somewhat difficult to install on curved areas, but easy to install in straight channels (such as the back stripe).
Set the purfling in place (with herringbone trim, the “arrow points” in the pattern should point toward the neck block).

 Herringbone Pattern - Gardening & Landscape - BBS - BobVila.com
Is it possible to bend the herringbone pattern to accomodate the curves in the walkway?
A herringbone pattern isn't really meant to be curved, but rather allowed to run parallel and perpendicular as it goes, being 'cut in to' whatever outside border or limits or frame established for the walkway or patio.
Attempting to 'bend' a herringbone pattern would create unequal size joints around curves, and you really wouldn't be happy with the final result.

 OSS "Herringbone Sea", Tropical Pacific
From the days of Skylab, astronauts have observed and photographed what they call "herringbone seas," that is, a sea surface where waves cross each other in a pattern that simulates a herringbone tweed.
Although crossing swell, and therefore herringbone seas, occur in nearly every part of the ocean, there is no better place to observe them than in the tropical Pacific Ocean, where sets of swell come from Northern and Southern Hemisphere storms.
The herringbone sea is seen in the waters to the right of the eddy that was being spun off the Equatorial Current system.

Herringbone calcite consists of alternating light and dark crenulated bands; each light-dark pair is 0.5-1.0 mm thick.
The tops of the elongate crystal are thus optically aligned and length slow.
Since herringbone calcite is associated with anaerobic depositional environments, the inhibitor promoting precipitation of herringbone calcite may be present only in poorly oxygenated sea water.

Types of bond include English bond, Flemish Bond, and Herringbone bond, but the most common type of brickwork seen these days is the simple stretcher bond, showing only the long side-surface of the brick.
Because only the outside of finished brickwork is visible, cheaper grades of brick are commonly used for the hidden parts of a wall.
The main advantage of this bond is economy in use of bricks, giving a wall of one brick thickness with fewer bricks than a solid bond.
