The Herrnhut commune declined rapidly after Krummnow's death on 3rd October 1880 (noone knew how old he was).
An embellishment to this story is that a very large rock was placed over his body, so that if Krummnow was smart enough to work out that he was going the wrong way, the rock would ensure that he stayed where he was meant to be.
August Hildebrandt, Herrnhut's baker and long-term member of the commune, delivered the eulogy at the funeral, and he respected Krummnow greatly and would have buried him in an appropriate way.

The village of Herrnhut, "The Lord's Watch," (in present day Germany) came about because on this day June 17, 1722 a little band of religious fugitives from Moravia (in the modern Czech Republic) asked Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf if they might settle on his land.
Zinzendorf was appalled at the divisions in the churches and hungered to unite the different factions in a spiritual peace.
Truly Herrnhut became a remarkable experiment in Christian community as well as a major catalyst for Protestant missions.

On this date, exactly 275 years ago this year, the members of the Herrnhut community experienced a pentecostal outpouring in the small Lutheran church in the nearby village of Berthelsdorf, Germany.
The 27-year-old Zinzendorf stepped in himself to quell the disputes and to give leadership to Herrnhut, the township forming about one kilometre across the fields from his family mansion, which still can be visited (in dilapidated condition) today.
Zinzendorf sent word back to the kitchen at Herrnhut, some two kilometres away, ordering baskets of food to be prepared so that the cells of community members could continue in small group fellowship.

On August 10th, Pastor Rothe was so overcome by God's nearness during an afternoon service at Herrnhut, that he threw himself on the ground during prayer and called to God with words of repentance as he had never done before.
Within fifteen years of the revival, the Moravians at Herrnhut had established missions in the Virgin Islands, Greenland, Turkey, the Gold Coast of Africa, South Africa, and North America.

The lot he drew was a young widow who brought a nine-year-old son with her into the marriage.
