Herschel Island, Yukon's first territorial PARK (established in 1987) is located just off the northern coast of the Yukon mainland on the BEAUFORT SEA.
The island is in an area of great scientific and ecological interest due to the Beaufort Gyre, an ocean current which carries warm, fresh water from the MACKENZIE RIVER delta along the Yukon coast.
As a result, the HERSCHEL ISLAND area is unusually rich in freshwater and saltwater marine life, birds and large mammals including predators like seals and bears.

Herschel Island is an island in the Beaufort Sea, which is considered part of the Arctic Ocean.
Pursuant to the policy of evacuating remote native areas (both Inuit and Indian) common to many Canadian provincial and territorial governments in the post-World War II era, the island's Inuvialuit population was gradually moved eastward, to towns in the Northwest Territories such as Aklavik and Inuvik.
The RCMP detachment on the island was withdrawn in 1964.

From 1910 to 1931, Herschel Island was subdistrict headquarters for the R.C.M.P. in the Western Artcic.

Named in 1826 by John FRANKLIN after the English astronomer Sir William Herschel, its geographical features were named in 1889 by Commander C.H. Stockton of USS Thetis.
Beginning in 1889, the island was used as a wintering station by American WHALING ships.
In February 1924 ALIKOMIAK AND TÀTIMAGANA were hanged at the island for murder, the first Inuit to be executed under Canadian law.

At Herschd Island a flock, all with molting primaries and unable to fly, was noted on August 1, 1914, and a speci- men collected there a week later had fresh wing and tail feathers nearly two-thirds grown.
The last fall migrant was noted at Herschel Island in a dry creek bed on August 1, 1914.

 North Star of Herschel Island
She is the only fully rigged ship in Canada, meaning that she crosses squares on each of her three masts.
She was used from 1936 to 1961 for transport of the winter’s catch of fur to market in early August and for transportation of supplies from Aklavik and Tuktoyaktuk to Sachs Harbour on Banks Island in late August and early September when ice conditions permitted sea navigation.
Except for three winters frozen in the ice, each fall North Star was hauled onto the beach and launched the following spring using three purchase tackle and hand winched by the whole village over skids of freshly killed seals.
