Johnson was born on September 18, 1812, in Burke County.
Johnson, with Towns, led the Southern Rights Democrats, who were opposed by a powerful Constitutional Unionist coalition headed by Howell Cobb, Alexander Stephens, and Robert Toombs.
Johnson changed his mind not out of any great fondness for the North but because he had become convinced that slavery was much more secure within the Union than outside of it.

Johnson faced an immediate challenge when an Alabama law permitting bus lines to segregate passengers by race was challenged in court.
Johnson held that the Brown decision applied to public transportation as well as public schools, and that the statute permitting segregation in buses was unconstitutional.
Johnson compelled the state of Alabama to reapportion its districts in accord with the principle of "one man, one vote," the principle that has guided reapportionment ever since.

On neither ballot did Douglas have two-thirds of the original or full vote of the convention (303 votes), but the convention now resolved that, having two-thirds of its present strength, he was nominated.
Benjamin Fitzpatrick, of Alabama, was nominated for the vice-presidency by 198½ votes to 1; and, as he declined the nomination, the national committee nominated Herschel V. Johnson.

Stephen A. Douglas was nominated by a wing of the Democratic party with Herschel V. Johnson for Vice-President, at Baltimore, June 18, 1860.
1860, the popular vote standing 1,866,352 for Lincoln and Hamlin, 1,375,157 for Douglas and Johnson, 847,963 for Breckinridge and Lane, 589,581 for Bell and Everett, and the electoral vote was 180 for Lincoln, 12 for Douglas, 12 for Breckinridge and 39 for Bell.
On June 8, 1864, Lincoln was unanimously renominated for President, with Andrew Johnson as Vice-President, and he was elected Nov. 8, 1864, receiving 2,216,067 popular votes against 1,808,725 for McClellan, the Democratic nominee.

In this role he served several times as President pro tempore of the Senate.
In 1860, Fitzpatrick was nominated for vice president of the United States by the wing of the Democratic Party that had nominated Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois for President, but refused the nomination, and ultimately Herschel V. Johnson of Georgia was nominated in his stead.
Fitzpatrick withdrew from the Senate on January 21, 1861, following the secession of his home state, returned to Alabama, and supported the Confederacy.

Truman wanted Austin, a senator from Vermont, as ambassador but couldn't appoint him right away because the constitution states that no senator can be appointed to a post during his term.

Bell and Everett received 39 votes from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia; while Stephen A. Douglas and Herschel V. Johnson received only 12 votes and these from the state of Missouri.
So you will see that Lincoln and Hamlin received more votes in the electoral college than all three of the other candidates combined.
