	Hersfeld - LoveToKnow 1911
		HERSFELD, a town of Germany, in the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau, is pleasantly situated at the confluence of the Geis and Haun with the Fulda, on the railway from Frankforton-Main to Bebra, 24 m.
		It was richly endowed by Charlemagne and became an ecclesiastical principality in the 12th century, passing under the protection of the landgraves of Hesse in 1423.
		As a secular principality Hersfeld passed to Hesse, and with electoral Hesse was united with Prussia in 1866.

		On 15 March 1058, he entered the Benedictine monastery of Hersfeld, in Hesse, and was ordained priest in the fall of the same year, at Aschaffenburg, by Bishop Liutpold of Mainz.
		Lambert of Hersfeld is best known to the world as the author of "Annales Lamberti", a chronicle of the world from its beginning to the year 1077.

		The town of Hersfeld, outside the abbey walls, also grew and flourished, one result of this being that it found itself strong enough to assert its independence of the rule of the monks, and in 1371 formally placed itself under the protection of the Landgraves of Hesse.
		The town of Hersfeld continued to rank as the capital of a principality until 1828.

		In 1821 districts were created in Hesse, including the districts Hersfeld and Rotenburg, which stayed nearly unchanged (except a short period after the revolution of 1848 when they were dissolved) through the annexion of Hesse-Kassel by Prussia and the creation of the Hesse state.
		In 1972 both districts were merged into one.
		The cross in the left half is taken from the old arms of the Hersfeld abbey; the linden branch is taken from the city arms of Rotenburg.
