  Herstmonceux Sussex - (Castle and Observatory) - an English Village (UK)
Herstmonceux is famous for its castle, which was built by Sir Roger Fiennes who was a veteran of Agincourt and Treasurer of Henry VI.
Herstmonceux castle is said to have a phantom drummer from the battle of Agincourt however the more likely explanation is that the drummer was a smuggler from the 1700's who was trying to scare the local populace away.
Herstmonceux church and castle are on the edge of the Pevensey Levels, and the views from the churchyard towards Eastbourne and the South Downs are very pretty.

The village (previously called Gardner Street) is part of the larger Herstmonceux civil parish which also includes Herstmonceux Castle, the village of Cowbeech and a number of smaller hamlets, including Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Cowbeech Hill, Stunts Green, Ginger's Green, Flowers Green and part of Windmill Hill.
Herstmonceux Castle (some 2 miles south-east of the village) is a former site of the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
All Saints (Church of England) Church, with its 12th century west tower and 13th/14th century nave, overlooks the Castle.

There are alleged to be at least two ghosts at Herstmonceux, one known as the Grey Lady, a young woman named Grace Naylor romantically (and inaccurately) said to have been starved to death in one of the towers.
But the interior of Herstmonceux was wrecked, the building was left to fall apart and in 1775 it was declared to be beyond repair.

Herstmonceux Castle in Herstmonceux, East Sussex, United Kingdom, is the home of the Queen's University International Study Centre.
A descendant of the Monceux family, Roger Fiennes, was ultimately responsible for the construction of Herstmonceux Castle in the County of Sussex.
Sir Roger was appointed Treasurer of the Household of Henry VI of England, and needed a house fitting a man of his position, so construction of the castle on the site of the old manor house began in 1441.

The ISC is situated on the historic 500-acre Herstmonceux Castle estate in East Sussex, UK, four miles from the Sussex coast between Eastbourne and Hastings.

During the first half of the 20th century the ruins were transformed into an impressive home and the external appearance of the castle was restored.

Although Herstmonceux Castle features a moat, 4ft thick walls and a gatehouse, it is more a defended manor house than a castle.
Built in 1441 by Sir Roger de Fiennes who served with Henry V at Agincourt and set in over 200 acres (80 hectares), it is one of the earliest large buildings constructed of bricks in Britain.
The Queen visited Herstmonceux in 1967 to open the Isaac Newton telescope, but by the 1980's far more use was being made of the telescope located on La Palma in the Canary Islands.

Ironically, the opening of the INT marked the beginning of the end for Herstmonceux.  It was soon realised that the site was less than ideal for a large telescope.
The attention of the RGO was now focused on La Palma and the building of the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope (WHT).  Responsibility for the RGO had passed from the Admiralty to the Science Research Council in 1965 and pressure for the RGO to move out of Herstmonceux gradually built up.
In 1990 it moved to Cambridge and less than 10 years later it was shut down completely.
