Topic: Hertz horn

  J.C. Bose: 60 GHz in the 1890s
He used waveguides, horn antennas, dielectric lenses, various polarizers and even semiconductors at frequencies as high as 60 GHz; much of his original equipment is still in existence, now at the Bose Institute in Calcutta.
James Clerk Maxwell's equations predicting the existence of electromagnetic radiation propagating at the speed of light were made public in 1865; in 1888 Hertz had demonstrated generation of electromagnetic waves, and that their properties were similar to those of light [1].
Hertz had used a wavelength of 66 cm; other post-Hertzian pre-1900 experimenters used wavelengths well into the short cm-wave region, with Bose in Calcutta [7,8] and Lebedew in Moscow [9] independently performing experiments at wavelengths as short as 5 and 6 mm.

SETI Article: SETI Horn of Plenty
One of Tony's antennas, used for 2.4 GHz satellite reception, is shown in Figure 9, and was an inspiration for the SETI Horn of Plenty.
The four horn sections are joined to 1" wide by 1/8" thick aluminum angle stock (sold locally at 75 cents per foot) with pop rivets.
However, the horn's excellent broadband impedance match, inherent lack of overspill, and low sidelobes mean its ground noise pickup will be significantly less than that of alternative antennas, providing a greater signal to noise ratio than one would expect from gain figures alone.

 edgarinterview
Essentially, the ideal horn driver is a mass-less piston, and when the mass reactance is equal to the acoustical throat resistance of a horn, the horn response rolls off.
I designed my horns so that the bass horn would roll off at the point where the midrange horn was turning on and the midrange horn rolled off where the tweeter was turning on.
In the pass band, the horn response is minimum phase, like most loudspeakers, but at the point where they start rolling off, near the flare frequency or at the point where the mass is rolling off the response, the phase changes at those points are very fast.

One of the largest Air Chimes, this trio of 8-inch-diaphragm horns produces a harmonious 3-note (85-, 110-, and 135-hertz) chord, producing 143 decibels at 100’.
Each bell and diaphragm are a different size and are tunable, a feature which led to this horn model’s demise.
Commonly known a fog horns, they are designed to produce very low notes, to travel longer distances.

hertz (science) - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about hertz (science)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
SI unit of frequency (the number of repetitions of a regular occurrence in one second).
Radio waves are often measured in megahertz (MHz), millions of hertz, and the clock rate of a computer is usually measured in megahertz.
The unit is named after German physicist Heinrich Hertz.

 Hertz - meaning of word
It is named in honour of the Germany physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz who made some important contributions to science in the field of electromagnetism.
One hertz simply means "one per second" (1 / s); 100 Hz means "one hundred per second", and so on.
The name hertz was adopted by the CGPM (''Conférence générale des poids et mesures'') in 1960, replacing the previous name for the unit, ''cycles per second'' (cps), along with its related multiples (''kilocycles'', ''megacycles'', and so forth).

The range of frequencies is typically from around 2000 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz (generally considered to be the upper limit of human hearing) but some tweeters reach up to frequencies of 30,000 Hertz and one exotic example is claimed to reach up to 100,000 Hertz.
Tweeters for sound reinforcement and public address applications are often horn loaded piezoelectric speakers.

A 500 Hertz tone means the cone, coil and former has to move 500 times a second.
When we talk about a one inch or two inch horn, we are actually referring to the opening between the compression driver and the horn flare.
A horn flare keeps the acoustic energy that passes through it contained in a given area.

Horns produced prior to 1880 were available in a wide variety of pitches and most should be considered only as collector's horns, not playable instruments.
A relacquered horn can be extremely difficult to detect and it's really not fun to find out the supposedly minty 1962 Selmer Mark VI you paid $4000 for is now worth $2000 or less because it's relacquered.
Even though the cost of maintaining a vintage horn may be high, a professional vintage horn is generally extremely inexpensive in comparison to a modern horn and can give you equivalent, if not better value.

The horns were very simple in that the only parts were the horn itself, a screw-in back cap, and either a single or multi-leaf diaphragm, making the horns consist of very few parts.
The "sound chamber" and "base" portion of the horn was cast separate from the bell, which treaded to the base.
A-75s were least common, and were usually used as a secondary horn on the back of a switcher, or as a back-up horn on the backs of old covered wagons.

The protuberances around the top of the mine, called Hertz horns, are part of the detonation mechanism.
Early mines had mechanical mechanisms to detonate them, but these were superseded in the 1870s by the Hertz Horn (or chemical horn), which was found to work reliably even after the mine had been in the sea for several years.
When a ship's hull crushes the metal horn, it cracks the vial inside it, allowing the acid to run down a tube and into a lead-acid battery which until then contains no acid electrolyte.

Russian mines were of truncated conical or later spherical shape with Hertz Horns.
The latter, invented in 1868, were a development of the Jacobi type used by the Russians in the Crimean War (a well caulked wooden keg with coned ends and five fuses).
In the Hertz Horn type a glass tube contained battery electrolyte which activated an internal battery and fired the mine when the tube was broken by hull contact with the mine.

THE BIGGEST HORN SUB OF THE WORLD
Many times to build bass horns everybody follows manual and books (and thats good to do, theory always teaches, experience is something else), we also have books but experience is much more worth and in this case the horn MUST not be seen by itself.
Talking about a BIG HORN SUBWOOFER there is something that I think people normally forget or do not take into consideration (and maybe books do not explain) that is the dimension of the room and the position of the horn mouths toward the listening point plus the shape of the room.
The room itself as it has been shaped is a horn below 20 Hz, then actually the holes in the floor are not really the final mouths below this frequency and the length from the throat to the listening position is half of a wavelength of 10 Hz.

 German Mines
In 1868, the Hertz horn was invented (see British Mines and USN Mines) and by 1914 these had become the most reliable way to detonate contact mines.
Large stocks of reliable Hertz horn contact mines were available, all equipped with automatic anchors that used hydrostats to set mine depth and lock the mooring cables.
Used four Hertz horns and mooring depth was 98 fathoms (180 m).

Unless you have the space to make a 100 Hertz horn (In depth) in addition, to creating the proper mouth size when using multiple boxes, the vented route is the better than keeping the internal chamber sealed.
But when you use them in mulitples (lets assume the horns are positioned properly in regards to coverage patterns) the horns will cover just a particular part of the audience.
Below the horns pattern control cutoff (assuming it being decently low) the output from the different cabinets will add together (assuming they are within 1/4 wl or so) and will sum together, adding to the output at the lower freq.
