Heruli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Heruli (spelled variously in Latin and Greek) were a nomadic Germanic people, who were subjugated by the Ostrogoths, Huns, and Byzantines in the 3rd to 5th centuries.
Records indicate, however, that the Heruli served in the armies of the Byzantine emperors for a number of years, in particular in the campaigns of Belisarius, when much of the old Roman territory, including Italy, Syria, and North Africa was recaptured.
Encyclopædia Britannica 1911 suggested that, since the name Heruli itself is identified by many with the Anglo-Saxon eorlas ("nobles"), Old Saxon erlos ("men"), the singular of which (erilaz) frequently occurs in the earliest Northern inscriptions, that "Heruli" may have been a title of honor.

 The Heruli & Lankorium
While the Heruli recognized a wide variety of spirits they actively worshipped only three deities: Wazzer, the god of warriors, Yerev, the goddess of the earth and fertility, and Nordan, god of the storms and bringer of life.
Heruli cattle and sheep, exotic furs, hardwoods, and other products of the Heruli forest lands could be traded for 'civilized' luxury goods, bringing wealth and status.
In this way the Heruli worship was modified by the Azeryani perception of their deities and the empire's idea of these three deities took on some aspects of the Heruli deities.

I have several times tried to improve the Heruli article by deleting speculative and outdated information about their supposed Scandinavian origins, their mastery of runes and their battle tactics.
That the Harii and the Heruli are basically synonymous is strongly evidenced by the fact that in the 500s when Salinga, daughter of the last Heruli king Rhodoulph (Honor-Wolf?), married Wacho, king of the Lombards, as his third polygynous wife, she named her son by him Walt-Hari - modern Walter - "ruler of the Hari/marauders".
I can only conclude from Salinga's naming act that the last acknowledged Heruli princess believed that her son was "ruler of the Hari" (rather than "ruler of the Heruli"), otherwise she would not have bothered naming him that.

Among themselves there is the same ferocity: the sick and the aged are put to death.
All these circumstances, so striking to a mind familiar with Scandinavian history, lead us to discover among the Heruli not so much a nation as a confederacy of princes and nobles, bound by an oath to live and die together with their arms in their hands.
