Hervor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hervor is the name of two characters in the cycle of the magic sword Tyrfing, presented in Hervarar saga and of which parts are found in the Poetic Edda.
The second Hervor was the daughter of Heidrek, the son of the first Hervor.
Hervor was born posthumously after her father Angantyr's death (he died during a duel against the Swedish hero Hjalmar), and she grew up as a slave.

Flashing Swords Volume 2, Issue 5: Tal's Tale
Hervor kissed that wraith like he was a living man. Then, with no word, she reached past him, right into the darkness of her father's grave.
Hervor washed her hands in that water, then she came to stand before me. I trembled to feel her so near, and it didn't shame me to weep when she took my face in her two hands.
The last I saw of Hervor Angantyr's daughter was the dark shape of her beside her old grandfather as they went walking down the road to the barrow hills, out to the sea and away north where there could be found passage away from Samso Isle.

Northvegr - The Saga of Hervor & King Heidrek the Wise
Hervor's Saga exists in many manuscripts, six of which are useful for establishing the text.
But a single obscure reference to Frodmar in the first verse of Chapter 5 may imply a different version, unless it is the name of Hervor's supposed father in the thrall's insult.
The second Hervor is said in Chapter 10 to have been fostered by a Jarl Frodmar in England, yet by Chapter 13, her foster-father has become Ormar, a Goth - all this according to the R-version.

Northvegr - The Saga of Hervor and King Heidrek the Wise
And in command there were Hervor, Angantyr's sister, and Ormar, her foster father--they had been posted there as a guard against the host of the Huns, and they had there a great army.
She saw a great cloud of dust to the south near the forest, so that for a long time the sun was hidden.
Hervor rushed down and called the trumpeter and ordered him to sound the alarm and assemble the army.

 The Saga of Hervor
And when the Jarl hears of this highwayman, he went there with his troops and caught Hervor and brought her home, and then she stayed at home for a bit.
It happened one time that Hervor was stood outside, near where some thralls were, and she was having a go at them, just as she treated everyone.
Then one of the thralls interrupted her, saying, “You, Hervor, all you want to do is evil, but evil’s only to be expected of you.

The Fairy Mythology: Eddas and Sagas: The Dwarf-Sword Tirfing
When the twelve sons of Andgrim were to fight with Hialmar and Oddur for Ingaborg, the beautiful daughter of King Inges, Angantyr bore the dangerous Tirfing; but all the brethren were slain in the combat, and were buried with their arms.
Angantyr left an only daughter, Hervor, who, when she grew up, dressed herself in man's attire, and took the name of Hervardar, and joined a party of Vikinger, or Pirates.
Hervor proceeded to the court of King Gudmund, and there one day, as she was playing at tables with the king, one of the servants chanced to take up and draw Tirfing, which shone like a sunbeam.

§7. Percy’s "Five Runic Pieces". X. The Literary Influence of the Middle Ages. Vol. 10. The Age of Johnson. ...
It is repeated, under the title The Incantation of Hervor by Percy, as the first of his Five Runic Pieces; and, after this, it became a favourite subject for paraphrase; it did not escape “Monk” Lewis; and it appears as L’Épée d’ Angantyr in the Poëmes barbares of Leconte de Lisle.
It will be observed that Old English poetry had none of this success—very slight success indeed, but still ascertainable—which attended The Death-Song of Ragnar and The Incantation of Hervor.
Perhaps, if Hickes had translated The Fight at Finnsburh—but he did not, and so the Icelandic page was taken and the Old English left.
