Heshbon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heshbon (also (H)Esebon, Esbous, Esebus) was an ancient town located east of the Jordan River in the modern Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and historically within the territories of Ammon and Ancient Israel.
Following the death of Moses, Heshbon became a town at the border between the Tribe of Reuben and the Tribe of Gad.
Heshbon also makes it into the Canticle of Canticles, biblical love poem of Song of Solomon where, in verse 7:4, the poet likens his love's eyes to "the pools of Heshbon." The speaks of the magnificent fish-pools of Hesebon.

Shortly after Heshbon united the tribes, the Kingdom of Dotan was invaded by a barbaric clan from the north.
Heshbon sent many men into battle against the invaders, and his son Karkor was triumphant.

Commentary on Jeremiah and Lamentations - Volume 5
They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
Calvin’s version is, “Under the shadow of Heshbon stood they who had fled from strength,” or violence, i.e., of their enemies.
There is no doubt but that enemies had triumphed over that city when it was taken; for that whole song spoken by Moses is ironical, and in saying that fire had gone forth, he referred to their counsels, for they thought that city sufficiently strong against enemies.

When you're done eating at Rafi's Restaurant on Ben Yehuda Street and are getting ready to leave, you tell the server, "Heshbon, b'vaksha—the bill please." As with many words in Modern Hebrew, this one has a long history, including its use in the rabbinic phrase, heshbon ha-nefesh, meaning an accounting or inventory of one's soul.
Such practices help us to take heshbon ha-nefesh, which should be a daily focus through the month of Elul, and especially through the Days of Awe, the period from Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 22–24) to Yom Kippur (Oct. 1–2).
Heshbon ha-nefesh requires a standard, a way to measure our souls, just as the heshbon at Rafi's Restaurant is based on the menu, the fare, and the prices among the competition.

Preparing the Surface of Your Life
Heshbon HaNefesh is a helpful method for those who choose to take on the Yom Kippur practice of feeling yourself participating in a Divine review of your ethical actions.
Being only human, you will have errors on your record, and so it helps to have a sense that you will earn "extra credit" in your examination by showing a record of sincere efforts at introspection and personal change.
Accordingly, there are many days in the calendar where incremental Heshbon HaNefesh work is traditionally practiced: Thursday evenings as part of lifting soul shmutz in preparation for Shabbat; every day (except Shabbat) of Elul, the month which precedes the High Holy Days.
