Heshen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heshen was born as the son of a Manchu military officer and received a basic education in a Qing government school.
In 1777, at the age of 27, Heshen was given the privilege of riding a horse within the Forbidden City, a prestigious privilege given only to high ranking officials of elderly age.
Heshen's hold on the Emperor was further strengthened when in 1790, his son was married to Gaozong's tenth and favourite daughter.

Jiaqing Emperor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Son of the famous Qianlong Emperor, he is remembered for his prosecution of Heshen (和珅), the infamously corrupt favorite of Qianlong Emperor (Gaozong), as well as for attempts to restore the state and curb the smuggling of opium inside China.
This novelty was introduced by his father the Qianlong Emperor who thought it not proper to have a whole generation of people changing their names on his son's accession to the throne.
Heshen's son and daughter-in-law was a sister of the new emperor and she was spared from the punishment.

Qianlong Emperor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With Heshen as the highest ranked minister and most favoured by Qianlong at the time, the day to day governance of the country was left in the hands of Heshen whilst Qianlong himself indulged on everyday luxuries and his favourite pastime of hunting.
It is widely said that Heshen laid the foundation for further collapse and corruption of the Qing government and eventually came to a point where it was impossible to reverse the negative impact already done to all levels of Qing Government at the time.
Insistent demands from Heshen and the Qing Court that the British Trade ambassadors should kneel and kowtow to the empty dragon throne worsened matters.

Heshen (Chinese: 和珅 ; pinyin: Héshēn ; other transliteration: Hoshen) (1750 - February 22, 1799), from the (Manchu) Niohuru clan, was a Manchu official of the Qing Dynasty.
The Jiaqing Emperor spared Heshen this horrible death and allowed him to commit suicide in his home on February 22nd, sparing his family, largely thanks to the pleading of Renzong's sister, Heshen's daughter-in-law who was married to Fengshen-Yingde, Heshen's sole surviving son, while Fu Chang'an was beheaded.
His total property was ultimately estimated at around 1,100 million taels(Ounces), reputedly estimated to be an amount equivalent to the imperial revenue of the Qing government for 15 years.

The Field Museum Information: Press Room
Heshen was a member of the Palace Guard when Qianlong first noticed the bright and charming young man with impressive martial arts skills.
He eventually put Heshen in charge of both the Grand Council, his inner circle of advisors, and the immensely powerful Imperial Household Department, which ran everything having to do with the emperor’s personal property and was, in effect, the wealthiest corporation that ever existed.
Heshen commanded many positions rife with opportunities for graft, and he didn’t hesitate to take advantage of them.
