The village of Heslington lies on a section of the northern of the two extensive moraines that stretch east-west across the Vale of York from the Howardian Hills on the north-east.
The evidence for early prehistoric occupation in Heslington is slight, though it is likely that the late Neolithic and Bronze Age (c3200-1500BC) activity was focused on the glacial moraine; traces of settlement from this period were discovered during recent archaeological work  on the site of the potential Campus 3 development.
However, the Heslington Archaeology Group is attempting to confirm the date at which the current street plan was put in place.
