Heslington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heslington is a village in the unitary authority of City of York in the north of England, south east of the centre of York.
Heslington Hall was built between 1565 and 1568 for Sir Thomas Eynns.
The local school, Lord Deramore's Primary School, serves the residents of the nearby Badger Hill estate, Heslington village and the families of the scholars of the University of York.

University of York 40th Anniversary website
Heslington Hall, as it now stands, is a twentieth-century modification of a typical small Elizabethan country house rebuilt in the nineteenth century.
George John Lloyd inherited the Hall from his uncle in 1856 (and, incidentally, was the man responsible for the building of the village school and St Paul's church) and, in turn, his daughter inherited the property.
Architecturally, the Hall was slightly changed externally in 1876 when some of the most eccentric parts of the 1855 skyline were removed (notably the staircase towers reverted to their former flat roofs), and internally in 1903.

University of York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The main campus is on the outskirts of the city, next to the village of Heslington, but the university also uses a number of historic buildings in the city centre.
At the time the university consisted of three buildings, principally King's Manor (former residence of Thomas Wentworth, and one-time headquarters of the Council of the North) and Heslington Hall (former residence of Thomas Eynns, Secretary and Keeper of the Seal to the Council of the North).
The proposal is for a new 70 hectare campus designed to mirror the existing main Heslington campus, to be built on land situated between Grimston Bar park and ride car park and Heslington village.

"Yorkshire: Tudor & early Stuart era: Houses" - Readings on Pat Patterson's Pages
Burton Constable Hall, built in Holderness by Sir John Constable or his son Sir Henry, has many of these features (though it was remodelled in the eighteenth century) and so did the demolished Howley Hall that Sir Robert Savile and his son John built in the West Riding in the 1580s.
A passage that ran through the house separated the hall from the service rooms and the lesser chambers, and draughts and kitchen smells were kept away by a screen, which in Elizabethan times was often carved in a wonderful manner (as at Burton Agnes) with a musician's gallery on top.
Halls, kitchens and parlours, and sometimes chambers as well were illuminated by large windows divided into numerous lights by mullions and transoms.

The stand-out building of the university is Central Hall, a half-octagon shaped concert hall which has been likened by many a student to a crashed space-ship.
A ban on pop performances in Central Hall was imposed, although it has occasionally been waivered, and Central Hall is still sometimes used for classical concerts (although most classical concerts are held in the music department's Jack Lyons Concert Hall).
While Central Hall is probably the biggest venue on campus, it is hindered by being designed for use as a seated venue only.
