Meligethes matronalis is strictly associated with Hesperis matronalis L. (Brassicaceae) in early Summer, whereas the larvae of the frequently syntopic M. subaeneus develop on Cardamine spp.
Waiting for the final results of further molecular and ecological researches concerning the same subject, an updated taxonomical outline of the Meligethes coracinus species-complex is also reported, and a provisional key to identification of species and included sub-complexes, is finally given.
The anatomy of the nectarial tissue in nectar-secreting flowers of six species, Hesperis matronalis L., L. maritima, M. bicornus, R. sativus, S. arvensis, and Sisymbrium loeselii L., was studied by light and scanning-electron microscopy.

Invasive Plants of Wisconsin: Hesperis matronalis, dame's rocket
Hesperis matronalis is a tall herbaceous biennial or a short-lived perennial that is widely planted and escapes readily.
There has not been good documentation of control efforts, but it seems likely that more extensive populations may require a major effort over a span of 5-10 years (or more) to exhaust the seed bank.

 Growing Old Fashioned Dame's Rocket
Hesperis matronalis may not sound familiar, but I'm sure one of its common names will: Dame's Rocket, Sweet Rocket, Queen's Gilliflower, Night Scented Gilliflower, Damask Violet, or Summer Lilac.
This hesperis is edible, but it's not the same variety as the herb commonly called Rocket, which is used as a green in salads.
Many people think of Dame's Rocket as a weed or a wildflower, which it is, but when it has fertile soil and is nurtured it becomes a charming plant that can be placed in a cottage garden, the back of a border or in mass groupings on its own.

Dame’s Rocket, Sweet Rocket, or Dame's Violet (Hesperis matronalis) is an attractive, but invasive plant.
A common garden flower introduced to America from Europe in colonial times, it is invading Wisconsin woodlands and has the potential to become ecologically devastating to native plant species.
A complete description of dame’s rocket, its habitat, life history and control suggestions are found on page 30 of the DNR publication, Wisconsin Manual of Control Recommendations for Ecologically Invasive Plants.
