Italian conference to study Hessdalen [mystery lights] Text - Physics Forums Library
Hessdalen is a valley in central Norway, 120 kilometers south of Trondheim.
Lights that were recorded to be below the contours of the mountains must have originated in the Hessdalen region, but lights that were recorded to be above the crest line may have originated at a great distance.
During a period of four days, unknown lights were seen on 10 occasions, and the flux-gate magnetometer registered 21 pulsations, of which 4 appear to correspond with the observations of lights, suggesting an association between some of the unknown lights and magnetic disturbances.

The Hessdalen LITS were the first to be subjected to scientific scrutiny using a whole host of hi-tech equipment.
It has been speculated that the strange lights could be related to some kind of weather phenomenon, or to lights produced by faults in the earth’s crust termed "earthlights".
All agreed that the Hessdalen lights were "real" and not illusions of any kind and that they were worthy of further scientific study.

I saw the typical orange-red light travel through the valley from south to north and I also observed a rare sight which appeared like a dozen flash bulbs going off with one and half seconds and then nothing and then the same thing happened a little further to the north.
These lights could open up a new avenue of physics and we have had scientists from the USA and Russia comment on the lights and have ruled out conventional explanations such as ball lightning.

The bulging dossier on the Hessdalen aerial phenomena - predominately lights but also nonvisual radar targets - certainly represents the most thorough, science-based study of what are generally called "noctural lights." There are no saucer-shaped machines, no alien visitors in the reports.
In general they consist of light balls of many forms and colors, characterized by pulsations, often erratic movements, occasional long duration, and intense emission of energy.
These lights are reported both in the sky and close to the ground.

After successfully videotaping anomalous lights in Marfa Texas she became interested in the application of geophysical monitoring technology to the investigation of geophysical parameters of earth lights.
Among the most interesting videotapes were balls of orange light that appeared overhead moving erratically, a large overhead purple-green meteor-like object, several moving night time lights near a distant river bed, and two minutes and forty seconds video of a brilliant scintillating light that disappeared on camera in a river bed during the daytime.
After confirming that these anomalous lights which appear worldwide, could be photographed and physically monitored she deemed them worthy of scientific study.

The "lights" were mostly seen in the autumn, winter and spring.
This may be because Hessdalen is so far north that the dark nights are very long in the winter; in the summer it is light nearly the whole night long.

Earth lights are an exceedingly rare anomalous light phenomenon, previously grouped under all-encompassing terms such as dragons, UFOs, and ball lightning before being recognized as a separate category.
The lights can be very dynamic, appearing in many different colours and shapes, and are reported to be able to move against the wind and reach extraordinary speeds.
Since earth lights are a local phenomenon, the "local hotspots" that give rise to them often become ingrained into local culture and folklore, and supernatural stories accrue round them over the years.

The balls of light which appear in the Hessdalen valley in Norway are exemplary of anomalous atmospheric luminous phenomena that occur frequently at some locations on Earth.
These changes are caused by sudden surface variations of the illuminated area owing to the appearance of clusters of light balls that behave in a thermally self-regulated way.
Other anomalous characteristics include the capability to eject smaller light balls, some unidentified frequency shift in the VLF range, and possible deposition of metallic particles.
