Situated in western-central Germany, Hessen borders on (from the north-west and clockwise) the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Hessen-Kassel was called the Electorate of Hessen from 1803 on, although since the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, there was no more emperor to elect anymore.
The state is called Hessen in German and Hesse in English; the English name for the state was taken from French.

 Hessen History
The Hessen was one of the old battleships that Germany was allowed to keep after World War I. After its service as a training ship from 1925 - 1934 the ship was rebuild as a target ship between 1935 and 01.04.1937.
All of its guns and engines were removed and the hull was enlarge with a new bow about 11,70 meters.
Between 1937 and 1945, the Hessen was used as a target for several major Kriegsmarine warships, and although its superstructure was often damaged in this role, those were only minor and secondary damaged that did not inflict the ships operational status.

When the Landgraviate of Hessen was partitioned among the sons of Landgrave Philipp in 1568, son Georg inherited roughly a quarter of his father's territory.
When, temporarily, Hessen Kassel prevailed in their claim over the city of Marburg and her university, in 1607 the high school in Giessen (on H-D territory) was promoted to the rank of university.
In the 30 Years War, Hessen Darmstadt sided with the Emperor in an attempt to further gain territory at the expense of Hessen-Kassel; this policy failed miserably.
