Established in 1886 as a village in Emma Township, Hesston began to grow as the Missouri Pacific railroad was expanding westward through the state.
In 1981, the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains was founded at the college; the 13 acre (52,609 m²) arboretum showcases more than 600 varieties of native vegetation.
Hesston is now home to Hesston College and the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains.

 EMU-Hesston Sign Articulation Agreement
According to undergraduate academic dean Marie S. Morris, Hesston and EMU have signed a "general education articulation agreement" that assures Hesston graduates that their associate of arts or associate of science degrees will be fully accepted and will grant students admission to EMU with "junior" class standing.
Beginning with the Hesston College graduating class of 2004, Eastern Mennonite University will accept the associate of arts and associate of science degrees as meeting the Eastern Mennonite lower-level general education requirements.
Dr. Morris noted that EMU has had a long history of cooperation with Hesston College in facilitating the transfer of students from the two-year school to the four-year university.

Hesston College interim president Peter Wiebe and Bluffton University president Lee Snyder, along with academic dean Marcus Yoder of Hesston and interim academic dean Sally Weaver Sommer, have signed a general education articulation agreement between the two Mennonite colleges.
Beginning with the Hesston College Class of 2005, the agreement guarantees Bluffton's acceptance of any Hesston graduate who holds an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree and assures the smooth transfer of credits to Bluffton University.
Hesston College academic dean and executive vice president for academic affairs Marcus Yoder commented, "A high percentage of our two-year graduates transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor's degree.
