  Basidiomycota
Basidiomycota is a division of fungi that produce spores in a structure called a basidium, which often produces four basidiospores.
They are traditionally divided into Homobasidiomycetes, which includes the true mushrooms (agarics[?], boletes[?]), puffballs, toadstools[?] and Heterobasidiomycetes[?] such as rusts and smuts[?].
They most often are heterothallic[?], but with a bipolar (unifactorial) or tetrapolar (bifactorial) mating system acting like many sexes.

seem to be distributed in other clades at the interface of the homo- and heterobasidiomycetes (notably the Sebacinaceae), but that is beyond the (present) scope of mor to resolve.
It includes a diverse assemblage of resupinate or pileate-erect taxa that are traditionally recognized as homobasidiomycetes (Cantharellaceae, Clavulina, Multiclavula, Hydnum, Sistotrema, Botryobasidium) or heterobasidiomycetes (Tulasnella, Thanatephorus).
The cantharelloid clade has often been resolved as one of the earliest-diverging groups in the homobasidiomycetes, and is possibly the sister group of all other homobasidiomycetes.

 Heterobasidiomycetes (Jelly Fungus) ...
The Tremellales and fungi of related orders are members of the division known as the Heterobasidiomycetes, a small group of fungi with jelly-like texture.
The characters that define the Heterobasidiomycetes are microscopic and relate to the physical structure of the basidium, where the spores are formed.
We should not assume, therefore, that all gelatinous fungi are Heterobasidiomycetes.

Science Fair Projects - Hymenomycotina   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The Hymenomycetes contains some 20,000 species, and about 98% of these are Homobasidiomycetes: most of the fungi known as mushrooms and including the bracket fungi and puffballs.
Species in the Hymenomycotina that are not Homobasidiomycetes include the jelly fungi, certain "yeasts", ear fungi, and others; these are gathered together as the class Heterobasidiomycetes.
The hymenium is the tissue layer in the basidiocarp where the cells develop into basidia and produce spores.

BASIDIOMYCOTA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The two principal classes of Basidiomycota are the Heterobasidiomycetes, which commonly have four-celled basidia, and the Homobasidiomycetes, typically with one-celled basidia.
These spores may soon reinfect the host plant but usually germinate in the soil the next spring and produce a short filament of approximately four cells, which bear basidiospores called sporidia.
The remaining Heterobasidiomycetes include various jelly fungi in the orders Auriculariales, Dacrymycetales, and Tremellales.
