A fauna of Heterocera (Insecta, Lepidoptera) of a previous USSR territory is poorly studied.
If the Heterocera fauna of the Western Palearctic (West Europe and North-West Africa) is enough studied because of J. de Freina and T.Witt (1987) then the territories of the South Asia (south from the previous USSR border) are still poorly investigated.
Suggested to your attention article is one from the planned circle of the check-lists on Heterocera of the previous USSR territory and deals with lappet-moths, Lasiocampidae.

Rhopalocera (~20.000 documented species) are diurnal butterflies characterized by the club-like ending of their antennae, while Heterocera are all the others (~130.000 documented and ~230.000 altogether), most often nocturnal but not always.
Except for having club-like antennae and being more colourful and "grander" than the Heterocera, the Rhopalocera are also characterized by the way they place their wings when resting or hibernating.
Whereas Heterocera spread their wings flat backwards over their bodies, Rhopalocera (mostly) fold them and place them vertically over the back (except for the Erynnis tages of the Hesperioidea superfamily).

There are undoubtedly many more species of flies and smaller insects than are yet known, but beetles and butterflies/moths are larger, more easily studied, and therefore get more attention in the entomological community....
Lepidoptera can be divided into sub-orders Rhopalocera (butterflies) and Heterocera (moths) - There are some 26000 species of butterflies, and over 110,000 species of moths known.
The Rhopalocera - Heterocera distinction is far too simplistic, and newer more comprehensive taxonomic schemes have been proposed and are widely followed.
