Heterochromatin is believed to serve several functions, from gene regulation to the protection of the integrity of chromosomes; all of these roles can be attributed to the dense packing of DNA, which makes it less accessible to protein factors that bind DNA or its associated factors.
Heterochromatin is generally stably inherited; when a cell divides the two daughter cells will typically contain heterochromatin within the same regions of DNA, resulting in epigenetic inheritance.
An example of facultative heterochromatin is X-chromosome inactivation in female mammals: one X chromosome is packaged in facultative heterochromatin and silenced, while the other X chromosome in packaged in euchromatin and expressed.

Heitz (1929) originally described as heterochromatin that portion of the nuclear chromatin which demonstrated its allocycly by maintaining a condensed state while the remainder of the nuclear chromatin was extending to what he termed the euchromatin state.

Euchromatin and heterochromatin are very typical examples of chromosome regions that are generally treated as segments.
Since the demarkation of eu- and heterochromatin is such a typical component of karyotype analysis, MicroMeasure treats this type of analysis separately from other segment types (up to 12 additional segment types may be defined: see Using Segments for more information).
