Veneroida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are generally thick-valved, equal valved and isomyarian (that is, their adductor muscles are of equal size).
The name means "perfected teeth", referring to the three teeth characteristic of the subclass Heterodonta to which this order belongs.
However they tend to be filter feeders, feeding through paired siphons, with a characteristic folded gill structure adapted to that way of life.

Palaeos Metazoa: Mollusca: Bivalvia: Bivalve Cladogram
Giribet and Wheeler's combined analysis supports the monophyly of bivalves, paraphyly of protobranchiate bivalves, and monophyly of Autolamellibranchiata, Pteriomorphia, Heteroconchia, Palaeoheterodonta, and Heterodonta s.l.
The monophyly of Palaeoheterodonta is among the most stable of the results, grouping the extant trigoniids with the freshwater unionids, and the sister-group relationship of the heterodont families Astartidae and Carditidae, which together constitute the sister taxon to the remaining heterodont bivalves.
