Heteromyidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The family of rodents that include kangaroo rats, kangaroo mice and rock pocket mice is the Heteromyidae family.
Most heteromyids live in complex burrows within the deserts and grasslands of western North America, though species within the Heteromys and Liomys genera are also found in forests and extend down as far as northern South America.
Although they are very different in physical appearance, the closest relatives of the heteromyids are pocket gophers in the Geomyidae family.

Le seul autre Heteromyidae trouvé in Costa Rica, Heteromys desmarestianus, est un rongeur à forêt humide et se trouve in the wetter eastern end of the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste.
Heteromyidae are distinguishable from any other wild rodent in Costa Rica by virtue of having cheek pouches that are hairy on the inside (that is to say, their evolutionary origin is through in-pocketing from the outside).
The cheek pouches are used to carry seeds that the mice encounter in the forest floor litter.

 North American Mammals: Chaetodipus baileyi
Pocket mice mostly eat seeds, using their "pockets," fur-lined, external cheek pouches, to bring seeds to their nests, where they store them in preparation for leaner times.
The fur lining of the cheek pouches in members of the family Heteromyidae is an adaptation for desert life: the seeds the rodents carry do not absorb body water the way they would if they were carried in the mouth.
Bailey's pocket mouse is the only Sonoran desert rodent able to eat jojoba seeds, which are toxic to most mammals.
