The thinking was that out of these five candidate theories, only one was the actual correct theory of everything, and that theory was the theory whose low energy limit, with ten dimensions spacetime compactified down to four, matched the physics observed in our world today.
That means if we take type IIA and Type IIB theory and compactify them both on a circle (one with a large radius and the other with a small radius) then switching the momentum and winding modes, and switching the distance scale, changes one theory into the other.
Superstring theories related by S-duality are: type I superstring theory with heterotic SO(32) superstring theory, and type IIB theory with itself.

I actually think that it is very healthy if some of these couplings remain zero at the stringy tree level (in the classical heterotic free fermionic models, only the top quark received a mass at the tree level), but they will have to study this issue later.

However, the string-string duality conjecture in six dimensions states that the strongly coupled limit of a Heterotic string theory in six-dimensions on a four-torus is equivalent to a weakly coupled Type II string theory in six-dimensions on K3.
Similarly, it states that the strongly coupled limit of a Type II theory in six dimensions on K3 is equivalent to a weakly coupled Heterotic string theory in six-dimensions on a four-torus.
Similarly, as a strongly coupled E8 x E8 Heterotic string theory in ten-dimensions is equivalent to the low energy limit of M-Theory on a "large" S^1/Z_2, the low energy limit of M-Theory on S^1/Z_2 x T^4 should be equivalent to a weakly coupled Type II string theory on K3.

The Type I string theory is related to the heterotic SO(32) theory by S-duality; this means that the Type I description of weakly interacting particles can also be seen as the heterotic SO(32) description of very strongly interacting particles.
At this point, there are only two string theories: the heterotic string theory (which is also the type I string theory) and the type II theory.
Taking seriously the notion that all of the different string theories should be different limits and/or different presentations of the same underlying theory, the concept of string theory must be expanded.

It may seem to be a problem to have 10 spacetime dimensions instead of the 4 spacetime dimensions that we observe, but we will see that in getting from 10 to 4 we actually find some interesting physics.
This theory is identical to the SO(32) Heterotic string, except that the gauge group is E8 X E8 which is the only other gauge group allowed by anomaly cancellation.
It is worthwhile to note that the E8 x E8 Heterotic string has historically been considered to be the most promising string theory for describing the physics beyond the Standard Model.

We present a method for explicitly computing the non-perturbative superpotentials associated with the vector bundle moduli in heterotic superstrings and M-theory.
The non-perturbative superpotential generated by a heterotic superstring wrapped around a genus-zero holomorphic curve is proportional to the Pfaffian involving the determinant of a Dirac operator on this curve.
We show that the space of zero modes of this Dirac operator is the kernel of a linear mapping that is dependent on the associated vector bundle moduli.

The Type IIA and Type IIB superstring theories are related by T-duality and the SO(32) Heterotic and E8 x E8 Heterotic theories are also related by T-duality.
These means that the strong coupling limit of the SO(32) Heterotic string is the weakly coupled Type I string and visa versa.
This D-string carries the same light fields as the worldsheet of the SO(32) Heterotic string, so when the Type I theory is very strongly coupled this D-string is becomes very light and we see the weakly coupled Heterotic string description emerging.

The authors have made an extensive search for a conventional Standard Model obtained from the heterotic strings on a Calabi-Yau manifold, and they claim that they have virtually found a unique solution.
They argue that their model is the first pure Standard Model obtained from string theory - and I am sure that Christos Kokorelis with his intersecting brane models would disagree.
OK, so this is a nice smooth Calabi-Yau space and one can use it both in weakly coupled as well as strongly coupled (Horava-Witten) heterotic strings.
