Research - Cell and Molecular Biosciences - University of Newcastle
In this study we attempted to resolve some of the relationships at the base of the ciliate tree by determining the phylogenetic position of a sample of heterotrich and hypothesized primitive karyorelictid ciliates.
The most parsimonious interpretation of the form of nuclear dimorphism in karyorelictids is that it is derived from the general condition as found in its sister group the aerobic heterotrichs.
The two anaerobic heterotrichs, Metopus contortus and Metopus palaeformis, comprise a distinct clade, so that the subclass Heterotrichia, as currently conceived, is not a monophyletic group.

Akio Miyake, Federico Buonanno, Piero Saltalamacchia, Miyuki Eiraku Masaki, and Hideo Lio; Chemical defence by means of extrusive cortical granules in the heterotrich ciliate Climacostomum virens.
Note : The heterotrich ciliate Climacostomum virens has colourless cortical granules morphologically similar to pigmentocysts (extrusive pigment granules) in the two coloured heterotrichs, Blepharisma japonicum and Stentor coeruleus, in which toxic pigments in pigmentocysts are used for chemical defence against pedators.
The function of chemical defence in extrusomes of heterotrich ciliates is, therefore, independent of pigmentation.

Notes : Mucus-like secretions by Spirostomum are demonstrated by a combination of anatomic and hydrodynamic technics whereby the presence of mucocysts and trails formed by their secretions can be shown.
The mucocysts in this heterotrich differ somewhat in form and content from those reported for hymenostomes.
It is suggested that the mucus-like secretions aid in lubrication when the ciliate swims near a solid boundary and reduce unsteady hydrodynamic effects when the organism swims in unobstructed fluid.

 BLEPHARISMA
Blepharisma is a heterotrich ciliate and a microphagus filter feeder.
It usually eats bacteria found in decomposing vegetation by drawing them into its vortex of membranelles that surround its buccal cavity (mouth).
Using what you know about the location of the buccal cavity and its related structures try to determine which view of the cell you are looking at.

These can be found during most sludge ages but are dominant during the middle sludge ages.
is a genus of heterotrich ciliates, and some species in this genus may extend up to 1-4 mm in length.
They have a line of membranelles leading from the anterior of the cell to the cytostome which is located about half way down the cell.

 Coral Diseases
Skeleton Eroding Band (SEB): A novel type of coral disease has been identified on Indo-Oacific reefs.
It is caused by Halofolliculina corallasia, an eukyryotic protozoan, or more specifically, a colonial, heterotrich ciliate that damages not only the living tissue nut also the skeleton of the coral.
The syndrome is found on a wide variety of massive and branching corals, and progresses similarly as in cases of BBD.
