Heworth is a village in the unitary authority of City of York in the north of England, approximately one mile to the east of the centre of York and northwest of Osbaldwick.
Although Heworth Village and some of the streets around it retain a village feel, development since the late 19th century has linked Heworth to the city, and it is effectively one of the ring of suburbs surrouding York.
Heworth Green, the road from York city centre to Heworth, is on the site of a Roman road.

The earliest Trust records for Heworth Colliery which are preserved in the archives, begin in 1916 when it was decided that, as 9 Trustees had died and there remained only three, it was expedient to form a new Trust.
Initial progress was slow and it wasn't until 1955 that the Superintendent Minister, Rev. W Thompson, and the Circuit Steward, John Strachan, met with the Planning Officer of the UDC to discuss the likelihood of a Methodist Church being included within the new development.

Heworth Moor is described as the first overt battle in "a greate discorde betwixt" Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland and Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury.

The original documents from which the wedding fracas emerges are in the form of prosecutions of Percy tenants and York Citizens for a riotous assembly on Heworth Moor and the road to Huntington.

It is bounded by Heworth Green to the south, the River Foss to the north and the housing developments of Villa Groves and Dalguise Groves to the east and west respectively.
Previous evaluation of Heworth Croft was carried out by Field Archaeology Specialists in March 2003 and showed that the site had been badly truncated by medieval agriculture and later landscaping associated firstly with the gardens of a Victorian villa and secondly with the construction of the campus itself.

The village of Heworth changed very little until the 1800's brought steampower, railways and new factories springing up along the shores of the river.
There was a disaster at the High Heworth pit in 1826, which may provide a clue as to why Joseph Robson left the area.
It was considered to be a well-ventilated and safe pit, and this may have saved lives as the death toll was only three (thirty-four died at Jarrow in the same year, and in the Stargate explosion at Ryton, also in 1826, thirty-nine died, of whom eleven had the surname Robson).
