The experimental technique we have used to determine the slip velocity relies on measuring the mean velocity of the fluid close to the solid wall using Near Field Laser Velocimetry (NFLV) [1].
Our results show that squalane as well as hexadecane slips on different smooth solid surfaces.
Hexadecane has indeed on average a cigar shape whereas squalane is more spherical.

Modeling the Kinetics of Contaminant Biodegradation By a Mixed Microbial Consortium Based on Carbon Mass Balance - ...
Hexadecane depletion and hexadecane-degrader population were monitored using sacrificed microcosms by centrifuging the extract so that the supernatant and the residue contained residual hexadecane and microbial population, respectively.
Hexadecane mineralization and population evolution of hexadecane degraders were determined from the ^sup 14^C-labeled hexadecane partitioning under the assumption that the radioactive and non- radioactive hexadecane have the same fate.
Radioactivity in the supernatant of the abiotic flasks remained constant at approximately 100% during the experiment, indicating that hexadecane was not degraded abiotically.

The alkanedegrader MPN method uses hexadecane as the selective growth substrate and positive wells are detected by reduction of iodonitrotetrazolium violet, which is added after incubation for 2 weeks at 20°C. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degraders are grown on a mixture of phenanthrene, anthracene, fluorene, and dibenzothiophene in a second plate.
Hexadecane and F2 (5 pL/well) were added to the alkane and totalhydrocarbondegrader plates after the wells were filled with growth medium, but before they were inoculated.
Although the yield on hexadecane was similar to that observed for growth on F2 and crude oil, hexadecanegrown cultures deposited nearly three times as much INTformazan as the cultures grown on the complex hydrocarbons.

Hexadecane mineralization in oxygen-controlled sediment-seawater cultivations with autochthonous microorganisms.
The amount of hexadecane degraded was constant, with an average value of 86% of the initially applied amount.
The fact that the hexadecane biodegradation rate was constant down to at least 0.04% DOT shows that the actual oxygen concentration is of minor importance as long as the oxygen supply is high enough to guarantee the oxygen-dependent degradation step.

Super spreading of oil by condensed water drops (DOI: 10.1039/b512045b)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In spite of the fact that the spreading coefficient of hexadecane is slightly negative on water, the oil actually spreads faster on the droplet covered polystyrene than on the pure substrate.
The phenomenon may be partially understood by considering the fact that the increase of the free energy of adhesion between the oil and the droplet-covered substrate is greater than the decrease of the cohesive energy of oil during the creation of new oil–vapor surface area.
The spreading kinetics of hexadecane on the condensed water drops, on the other hand, exhibited a power law of 0.2 for first 2 min followed by the decrease of the exponent to 0.14.

However, as the hexadecane continues to spread on the rough surface, it thins and consequently the oil–vapor interface roughens considerably.

The seasonal pattern in nitrification, denitrification and hexadecane mineralization, and in the occurrence of nirK in the South Saskatchewan River biofilms was: fall greater than winter, which was equivalent to spring.
Hexadecane mineralization was higher in fall 1999 than in fall 2001, denitrification was similar in these two years, and no seasonal pattern of nitrification was observed.
At the concentration assessed (1 ppb), hexadecane partially inhibited denitrification to similar extents in both years, had a negative impact on nitrification and hexadecane mineralization in fall 1999, and a positive impact on these two latter activities in fall 2001.

Hexadecane treatments resulted in a two-fold increase in mRNA, and a four-fold increase in P450 protein levels relative to control cultures.
The doubling of steady-state cyp110 mRNA levels in response to hexadecane treatment was independent of nitrogen status of the culture, consistent with previous data showing the entire nifD element is not required for nitrogen fixation in heterocysts [9].
The hexadecane effect on cyp110 gene expression was further examined using CYP110-specific antibodies to probe for the presence of P450 protein in nitrogen-fixing Anabaena 7120 cultures.

Direct experimental evidences for flow with slip at hexadecane - solid interfaces
The limit condition for the flow rate at the wall for a Newtonian fluid with various solid/liquid interfaces was studied experimentally using an original high resolution technique.
A notable interfacial slipping was shown for the hexadecane flowing on a surface with low roughness and covered with methyl groups (non wetting surface for the hexadecane).
The systematic study of various modified surfaces made it possible to identify two key parameters fixing the amplitude of slipping at the wall and acting in an antagonistic way on the roughness of the surface (geometric and chemical) and the fluid/surface interactions.

The influence of a nonionic (alcohol ethoxylate) surfactant (Witconol SN70) on biodegradation of phenanthrene and hexadecane (nonaqueous-phase liquid) in soil was studied in batch and transport systems.
Simultaneous enhancement of phenanthrene and hexadecane degradation was noted at surfactant doses resulting in aqueous-phase surfactant concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (CMC).
Mechanisms of inhibition of phenanthrene and hexadecane degradation at supra-CMC surfactant concentrations may include changes in interfacial chemistry and subsequent mass transfer processes due to sorbed surfactant, reduced bioavailability of micelle-bound phenanthrene and hexadecane, or inhibition of specific members of the microbial community responsible for hydrophobic organic compound degradation.

 Assessment of solvent toxicity
Solvents of a highly apolar nature, such as hexadecane, were identified as being non-cytotoxic, and thus suitable for use with whole-cell systems.
This has revealed that the cytotoxic nature of polar organic solvents, such as octan-1-ol, may be negated by dissolving them first in apolar, non-cytotoxic organic solvents, such as hexadecane, before exposure to the cell suspension.
In order to test this contention the highly cytotoxic (relatively polar) solvent octan-1-ol was dissolved in hexadecane, with the result that the toxic effects of octan-1-ol were removed at every concentration of octan-1-ol tested (Fig 1).

The use of these expressions to correct the associated systematic errors is illustrated by the analysis of the measured rupture forces between single hexadecane molecules in water.
The analytical model based on the asymptotic freely jointed chain stretching is employed to analyze and correct the results of the double-tether force-spectroscopy experiments of disjoining "hydrophobic bonds" between individual hexadecane molecules that are covalently tethered via poly(ethylene glycol) linkers of different lengths to the substrates and to the AFM probes.
Application of the correction algorithm decreases the spread of the data from the mean value, which is particularly important for measurements of the dissociation rate, and increases the barrier width to 0.43 nm, which might be indicative of the theoretically predicted hydrophobic dewetting.

In the present study, we surveyed metabolites formed during growth on hexadecane by the sulfate-reducing isolates AK-01 and Hxd3 and by a mixed sulfate-reducing consortium.
Evidence indicating hexadecane carboxylation was not found in AK-01 extracts but was observed in Hxd3 extracts.
In the mixed sulfate-reducing culture, however, metabolites consistent with both fumarate addition and carboxylation mechanisms of hexadecane degradation were detected, which demonstrates that multiple alkane degradation pathways can occur simultaneously within distinct anaerobic communities.
