HEXAPODA - LoveToKnow Article on HEXAPODA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A true insect, or member of the class Hexapoda, may be known by the grouping of its body-segments in three distinct regionsa head, a thorax and an abdomeneach of which consists of a definite number of segments.
The Egg.Among the Hexapoda, as in Arthropods generally, the egg is large, containing an accumulation of yolk for the nourishment of the growing embryo.
But a survey of the Hexapoda as a whole, and especially a comparative study of the tracheal system, can hardly leave room for doubt that this system is primitively adapted for atmospheric breathing, and that the presence of tracheal gills in larvae must be regarded as a special adaptation for temporary aqtiatic life.

Until 1893 P0 one doubted the correctness of the assumption that the Chilopoda and Diplopoda were orders of a class Myriapoda of the same systematic status as the Arachnida or Hexapoda.
As the basis for this classification was taken, the position of the generative orifices which open in the Opisthogonea at the posterior end and in the Prosogonea near the anterior end of the body.
As a matter of fact, in the Chilopoda they are situated on the penultimate or pretelsonic somite; in the Ilexapoda upon the antepenultimate somite (male) or a little farther forward (female).

 Information on Hexapoda
[1913 Webster] Note: The Hexapoda have the head, thorax, and abdomen differentiated, and are mostly winged.
Many (the Metabola) undergo a complete metamorphosis, having larv[ae] (known as maggots, grubs, caterpillars) very unlike the adult, and pass through a quiescent pupa state in which no food is taken; others (the Hemimetabola) have larv[ae] much like the adult, expert in lacking wings, and an active pupa, in which rudimentary wings appear.

 Arthropoda
Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical segmented animals with paired and usually jointed appendages, on some or all of the body segments, with chitinous claws.
Although the ICZN does not govern names above the rank of family, nevertheless, it is usual practice to converse names and defer to priority.
The Hexapoda comprises five or six classes, several of which were formerly batched up in the paraphyletic "class" Apterygota.

The phylogenetic relationship of Hexapoda has been debated for a long time, which will be resolved mainly depending on the settlement of monophyly, affinities and interrelationships among Protura, Collembola and Diplura.
So it would be suggested that the phylogenetic relationship of Hexapoda is [Parainsecta (Collembola + Protura) +Campodeoid +Insecta (Japygoid + Ectognatha)].

Summary: The collembological structure of the population of soil microarthropods in the Monegros Area (Northern Spain) was studied.

An insect is a member of the Phylum Arthropoda, Subphylum Uniramia, Class Hexapoda.
The taxonomic organization beyond the class Hexapoda subdivides the class into logical groupings.
These subgroups are distinguished by the appearance of the mouthparts (enveloped or exposed), the presence or absence of wings and, if wings are present, how they appear to develop (externally or internally).

In some academic traditions the term 'entomology' only refers to insects (in a broad sense, i.e., = Hexapoda), but often the study of the other 'terrestrial' arthropods, i.e., myriapods and arachnids, is - as here - is considered part of 'entomology'.
The RB arthropod classification, which recognizes three main groupings of extant taxa: Chelicerata, Crustacea and 'Uniramia' (comprising Onychophora, myriapods and Hexapoda) is rooted in the 'Mantonian' view.
Crustacea and Hexapoda may be sister groups, or the latter subordinate in the former.
