With the change in the name of the genus (see Grubb, Chapter 4.1, this vol.), this subspecies should now be referred to as Hexaprotodon liberiensis heslopi (Corbet, 1969).
An attempt was made in 1989/90 to obtain up-to-date information on the status of the species through the African Suiform Questionnaire Survey and related correspondence.
Habitat and Ecology The pygmy hippopotamus is rarely seen because of its secretive, nocturnal habits and consequently not much is known of its ecology.

Unlike its larger relative, the Hippopotamus, relatively little is known about the Pygmy Hippo's diet or behavior, although it is clear that the Pygmy Hippo is adapted to forest environments rather than the more open plains and grasslands that the Hippopotamus prefers.
Some authors place the Pygmy Hippo in the genus Hexaprotodon, along with a number of fossil forms.
Pygmy Hippos stand about 75 cm (30 inches) high at the shoulder and weigh 180 kilograms (400 pounds).

The Afro-tropical Hippopotamuses - Hippopotamidae Hippopotamus and Hexaprotodon 4.1 Taxonomy and Description By Peter Grubb Introduction The hippos, Family Hippopotamidae, are separated from all other suiformes in the Superfamily Anthracotheroidea.
The two living and three recently extinct forms may be described as follows: The Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis) The West African pygmy hippo has usually been referred to the genus Choeropsis but Coryndon (1977) has shown that it is essentially one of the hexaprotodonts - more generalized hippos, previously thought to be completely extinct.
In spite of differences between this animal and the hexaprotodonts in the number of teeth, Coryndon believed they should no longer be placed in separate genera.

The hippos' teeth are regularly cleaned by zoo keepers as part of their care routine and until now a broom for each hippo has done the job perfectly.
This summer keepers decided the brooms just weren't snazzy enough for the hippos and ordered two giant 5-foot (1.5 meter) toothbrushes for the pair, a pink one for Thug and a blue one for companion Nicky.

There are two types of Hippopotamus - the Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus Amphibius) and the Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis).
The pygmy hippopotamus shares the barrel-shaped body form of the closely related common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), but is considerably smaller.
Genetic studies have revealed that hippopotamus share a common ancestor with whales (3), while recent fossil evidence alludes to a close relationship between whales and all ungulates (7).
