Topic: Hexgrid

Hex map - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The map is subdivided in small hexagons of identical size.
The advantage of a hex map over a grid map (a map made up of squares) is that the distance between cells remains constant in all directions.
The hexgrid was a distinguishing feature of the games from Simulations Publications and Avalon Hill.

Re: (TFT) How Many of You Use Megahexes?
The alternative is to let the hexgrid rule, and have corridors, roads, etc. meet at 60 degree angles.
This is, I imagine, why hexgrids were first adopted.
I've taken to using a hexgrid, and 'imposing' 90 degree angle buildings and the like on it.

ADC2 Hints for symbol set preparation
Decide whether you are going to use a hexgrid overlay or if you are going to make the hexgrid an integral part of the terrain symbols.
If you use a hexgrid integral to the symbol, it's there all the time.
However, an hexgrid overlay displays on top of hexsides, which can interfere with the appearance of rivers, borders and other types of hexside symbols.

Strategy & Tactics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite the diversity in themes, the style of the games was fairly consistent.
They predominatly used a hexgrid for the maps and many rule concepts such as zones of control were repeated in many games.
In addition to the games, the magazine featured many insightful articles on military history, many of them notable for applying modern quantitative analysis to battles that had traditionally been described in a narrative "heroic" style.

Section 11: Notes on the Hexgrid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Since the hexgrid therefore only represents intervals between the center hex and all other hexes, not between any two hexes on the grid, we can say that the 1/1 could just as easily be shifted around the hexgrid.
Say, for example, we were to use the hexgrid as a template to compose a piece.
If we start with A-1/1 then modulate to D-4/3 we could easily transfer the hexgrid to center on D, making it D-1/1.

COMBATSIM.COM: Airborne Assault: Red Devils Over Arnhem
A little while back I was having lunch with a wargaming buddy of mine who (unlike me) has had some actual military experience.
I asked him what his ideal wargame would look like, and without hesitation he told me that units would not sit on a hexgrid superimposed on a map, but would have a footprint of area occupation defined by unit frontage and depth.
The unit counters still have the standard boardgame-like appearance, which has been adopted by computer wargames for years, but there is no hexgrid on the map.

Matthew G. Kirschenbaum: I Was a Teenage Grognard
While my brother was more into wargames than I, I do have a great fondness for the hexgrid terrain maps.
At 52, I am proud to be an adult grognard, having moved from the hexgrid of my first board wargame (AH"s Gettysburg, received as a 12th birthday present from my father) to the relative ease of letting a CPU take care of all those burdensome, time consuming administrative chores.
I had the pleasure of a "live" opponent in my best friend for a few years, but by sophmore year I became more interested in sports and game complexity no longer allowed finishing a complete game in an afternoon.

 COMBATSIM.COM: Korsun '44
As with all Panzer Campaigns games, Korsun ’44 is a turn-based operational level wargame played on a hexgrid with units being generally battalion-level strength in scale.
The map onto which the hexgrid is superimposed can be viewed in either two dimensions or three dimensions and at two levels of zoom.
Personally, I find the 3-D view in the Panzer Campaigns games to be pretty useless, and certainly not aesthetically pleasing.

Basing on this, and basing on how the VASL map is traced (shaded half hexes like B0, no half hexes like A17 at all), and on the fact that I've seen two guys playing this way, my question is: are those half hexes in play?
Should we refer only at the interior of the depicted hexgrid when talking about "map" in this case?

Another style of wilderness adventure (and I'm going to pick on Mark Clover's "Whispering Woodwind" here) could possibly be called the "journey" - the task is to get from point A to point B, where the map is known.
A fourth style of wilderness adventure (see in many 2e FR adventures) eschews the hexgrid, you travel in "known" terrain, but there is more choice about the journey.
The transparent hexgrid is pretty good for wilderness travel when the PCs know where they're going.

Because I like that and don't play all that much with colors, the final game will have a few more colors, but in general it should keep at least a bit of the sterile lookandfeel of the current stuff.
Nope, it will use a normal tilemap, which just happens to look like a isometric hexgrid, even different heights of the map should be possible without actually changing anything of Stratagus core, see this picture for a demonstration.
